Box on SWB Series 3 is being checked by auto specialist in Dublin

He hasnt worked on Many Z's so looking for some info regarding his diagnosis.

Z wouldnt change from 2nd to third. 1st to 2nd OK

On inspection the Filter in he Box had disintegrated and its pieces were making their way through the BOX ruining it.

After a full flush and clean we ended up with only first gear. Now we are going to replace both the Speed sensor and TPS and this should do the trick.

However:

He has been advised from a UK specialist thet if this happens and it seems to regularly you still have to remove the box and remove and re-assemble torque convertor to clean. ALso the Oil cooler rad has to be removed and replaced as they CANNOT be cleaned thoroughly as particles can get lodged in the veins.

Are these last two topics really necessary

IF so it will send my Repir bill from a couple of hundred euro to 2500 euro big difference.

Any ideas

Thanks

Roy

I know nothing about the guts of an auto box, but if you are still using the rubbishy OEM cooler built into the rad then it would make a lot of sense to fit an aftermaket one at this point. Need not be very expensive and would save trying to clean the old one, which is probably blocked with debris anyway.

you can now change all the ATF insitu, if specialist has the right gear. But if you have bits floating about, suugest you strip out TC to make sure they dont do any more damage!

I used to work on Autos, Years ago now, BUT, YOUR AUTO MAN KNOWS NOTHING.. He is not a specialist. And you will get nothing but heart ache if you use him.

Just one point, the ONLY way the split a torque converter is to cut it open on a lathe, and then reweld it.

And yes the crap will be spread all throught the box, and yes the cooler can be cleaned, but it is not easy to get it clean.

I could go on but I am not a specialist either.

He is actualy a mercedes Auto specialist.

So far he is saying if we replace speed sensor and potentiometer Iwill get my gear shift back. Which was the main problem

BUT

If i continue to use the box even with some of the particles in it ie not a clean environment I run the risk of blowing the box completely due to overheating or destroying the face of the torque convertor.

What do you think

Sounds more to me like you need the solenoids replacing in the box. Have you pulled the error codes from the 'box???

CheerZ,

Andy

I'd say that you should do the job once, properly and then forget about it. Beats having to take it out again in a few months or it packing up in the middle or nowhere !

In my sometimes not so humble opinion, your mans comments were so fundametaly flawed that I cant consider him to be of any value with regard to any auto box.

The debris from the filter will spread throughout the box in no time at all, and in the old days any ingress of this type of debris caused all sorts of minor damage which resulted in major damage, ie valves sticking, oil ways getting blocked etc which cause the major damage, often caused by low pressure.. It is easy to not notice low pressure in an auto box, and the clutches and bands get wiped out.

Over heating is not likely to be a problem caused by the debris, cant see why he would say that. Destroying the face of the converter? There are needle rollers in some converters, (not many), in others just plain bearing faces. I suppose these could be affected, but the main worry in my opinion would be as mentioned earlier.

3rd gear is a weak point on these boxes. Not from a solenoid view but from a wear point. The clutch for 3rd is too small.

If you ring Ken, on 01296 481145 and tell him what you have got I would expect him to give you a proper diag.

Sureley if there is "bits" floating around in the fluid, the "bits" must have come from some part of the box, and without fixing or replacing the part that the "bits" have come off of, you will just be in for more trouble in the future.

i hope that makes sense, i know what i mean anyway, i think
