As a newbie, I was wondering if anyone could explain the various levels of membership on the site, then I would know how much reverence and respect to give to the 'old hands'

You are a newbie - you peruse the site.

You discover it's a valuable source of information and mickey-taking.

You wonder what you're missing.

You send £20 to Craig.

You gain access to all the forums you can't yet see.

You achieve Nirvana.

HTH

:D ;)

Anita.

Thanks, I also just read Craig's posting on the technical forum and find that as a newbie, I can't actually send a PM to Craig !

Come on, this £20 is burning a whole in my pocket and I feel the need to spend it on wild women and fast cars. Or maybe I'll just waste it !

;-)

Yes, there truly is a flip side to the North South Divide!

We can buy houses for about £50 and a Gud night owt in Wigan will set you back about 30p! (women included!)

LOL!

Yep, I like to work just one hour a week too Mike !

and curiously I see I have now been promoted to 'Member' as opposed to 'Junior member' - cool. Is that cos I'm posting so many silly questions, or is it 'hush money' to stop me asking so many questions??

[Looks for icon with head scratching, gives up and puts his shades on...]

So how many posts to become a member, then senior member:confused:

I reckon there should be another category, cheapo member for those not paid up :D

Matz, I think 30 posts could be a turning point - send two more in and see what happens!

But it only counts per thread you write on doesn't it?

So maybe I shpuld start 2 new threads - how about, my car works fine thanks and NZR: Large Baps.

Andy, my cheque has gone off in the post now, but this post from Craig, to which I have been directed on various occasions, doesn't actully answer the DEEPER questions of membership hierachy, which fascinate some of us to distraction (SAD but true!)

There is a real need for a more detailed info sheet on how the site operates and is set up. I've sent my £20 off now, but I really don't know what I'm going to get to it. I'm simply considering it as a reasonable contribution - given that I've already received some very useful help and advice from people on this site.

Hierachy ? Well Craig set up this forum and it ran for a couple of years on "borrowed" hardware and bandwidth. The time came to make it official and we had to fund hardware, software and bandwidth. We were lucky in that Senna provided the hardware for a good price and Mike Groves now hosts it at his company for free (up to a bandwidth limit). The contributions paid for that and any excess will be used to fund hardware/software repairs, upgrades etc and perhaps to fund club spaces at events like Billing or whatever.

People involved are :-

Craig & Nico (Admin), although Nico has gone AWOL

Me (Moderator and part-time admin)

Gio, AndrewG, Martinfa, Lymon (Moderators)

That's it ....

Enjoy !

None whatsoever! :D :D

Gio - paid up member of the lowerarchy

Ah, Gio, you've seen right through my subtly veiled point there!

If senior members are nothing more than people who have little better to do than sit at a computer all day typing contributions to the site, then the amount of respect due should realy be limited to the relevence of their contributions!

I can already spot the same names appearing whenever a real technical query crops up - yes you know who you are!

What I'm keen to know is whether these contributors are all professional Z mechanics, or just keen amateurs or a mixture of both etc. I'd like to know how long they've been Z enthusiasts etc, cause all of this helps you to assimilate the advice (particularly when conflicting views are expressed).

I read with interest some mud flinging on the subject of changing a cambelt, where two, clearly experienced, members were having their abilities questioned from others who had never changed a cambelt (!) - It's useful to know who's who when you read these postings so you can get your pinches of salt ready!

If y'know what I mean!

PS - I will be the first to admit that I know next to nothing about the mechanical practicalities, but I know when a car is right and I have plenty of driving (and some track) experience.

Junior/Senior is just based around number of posts.

You soon get to understand who knows what they're talking about when it comes to technical issues.

The following is intended as a personal opinion only and not to kick off any argybargy. There are many more members here whose opinions I respect and read their posts with interest - I don't have time to list them all.

They don't all agree with each other about technical aspects (come to that about anything else either :D ) and I am not qualified to say who is "better" than anyone else - you have to make up your own mind.

Luke of the Z Centre is Technical Advisor to the Z Club for the 300ZX Z32.

Mike Feeney (although he doesn't post here - just on the Z Club site) is also Technical Advisor to the Z Club.

AndyP has built his own very comprehensive site of Z Technical info http://www.300zx.org.uk

Warren (300z) has had more engines melt under him than anyone else I know.

AndyDuff has a fearsomely impressive reputation and the record for the longest re-build ;) but it sure looks pretty.

PaulC is a Merc spannerman.

JeffTT runs his own workshop and has done bits and bobs on my car.

Leonardo (PPS) is by all accounts the dogs danglies for paint (never used him personally).

Lymon is a Dutch Z32 God (or Z32 God to the Dutch if you see what I mean)

And Craig sits at the top of the pile!

There are lots of others as well but I don't want to

sit at a computer all day typing contributions to the site
lol so will stop.

Hopefully other positive opinions might arise - but I would ask that argy goes to Fight Club!!

Gio (I think I'll leave the country now)

Nigel........welcome mate.

The thing to remember is that the posts are "advice" and it is up to you to draw your own conclusions and decisions from this.

Many people on here "know their stuff" and I would listen to them if I had a problem.....as you said you are starting to learn who these people are.

I welcome advice from everyone personally......I wouldn't wear the detective hat too much bud.

I would even ask Nelson about MASS!

I am fortunate enough in my job to be able to flick on and off here several times throughout the day.........to learn from other peoples posts and to make my own when needed.......I consider myself lucky to be able to do this as I have a passion for my Z, not having "little else to do". Time on here is never wasted, you are always learning.

Gosh, I didn't think I might offend anyone by suggesting that sitting there typing contributions to the site was a 'waster's' pasttime - in fact it was meant as a self-derogatory comment, because it 's exactly what I have been doing since I bought my Z last month!

SO, in case there's any doubt - I apologise profusely to anyone who feels offended by my comments.

It seems that seniority of membership is about the legnth of time-served as a member, more than proven track record, which certainly answers one question. But let's face it, the opinion of someone who's been an enthusiastic Z owner for years is still very useful to someone like me, who's finally bought my first Z after years of thinking about it.

Perhaps one day I'll have a positive answer to someone else's query, (I certainly feel that I know quite a bit about the differences in Import and UK specs etc) but for now, I'm still learning the ropes.

And I wanted to ask, what MASS is Nelson knowledgeable about?

;)

Sounds like there's a story behind that one.

C'mon Nelson, tell us all!

I'm a bit defensive maybe, sorry, just like this place. (like, as in fond- not this place is defensive!)

Nelson has stripped everthing out of his car with the theory of less mass = better performance.........he has no seats and sits on an old milk crate to drive it! :D

Ohmigod ! ;)

Try a search ... LOL :D

C'mon Nelson, tell us all!

anyone is free to join

anyone is free to post

anyone is free to give advice

anyone is free to take advice.

If you follow advice and its bad though you have no recourse, people have taken bad advice before and its cost them a lot of money.

A lot of members are very technical, especially andyP, andyduff, jeffTT, paul C and I generally trust what they have to say,

For any other newbies who share my idle curiosity, it seems that junior members become full members at 30 posts, then senior members at 100 posts.

(Is this right all you experts?)

It might be a little sad to want to know this,, but it helps to know a little bit about the people you're dealing with - I mean you could all be perverts just trying to get into my pants!

No, let's not dwell on that thought!

(I'm starting to wish I hadn't used such a transparent User Name now! te he!)

Why would we want to get in your pants if you're already in them ? LOL

And while you're wondering what benefits the number of posts bring ... when you get to 250 you can load your own Avatar !
