Some of you may already have 6x9's in the rear mouldings but just to let the rest of you know that 6x9's fit in the rear mouldings without any problems.

You obviously have to make some new brackets up as they can't quite fit in the existing 6x4's LOL :D.

I bought a sheet of steel from B & Q and used the original bracket legs. I welded them onto the new speaker mount and dropped it down slightly.

You have to give the passenger side wheel arch a little gentle tap to make room for the base of the speaker, but there is nothing under there so unless you make a hole in it there's no need to worry.

They sound pretty dam good :). No muffling or vibrations which I was thinking I may get being such a tight fit. The 6x9's I have are 3 way so there isn't much base but then, I'm starting to put my amps and Subs in when I get my car back.

Stuart,

I have my Z booked in for a new stereo next week and I'm getting Diamond 6 x 9's in the doors. The rear speakers also need replacing , but am I to understand that you managed to fit 6 x 9's in there too?

Are we talking about the same car here??

Mine's a JAP 2+2 ?

(There's no smiley sign for ' getting very excited about the prospect of having bigger speakers !' )

Mine is also a Jap 2+2 :D

The guys who are fitting your 6 x 9's in the front will have to cut a section of the original speaker bracket out and weld a new section on. Do they know what ?.

The rear 6x9's are a squeeze but they fit fine. On the passenger side I had to give the rear wheel arch a little gentle persuasion but there is nothing under there and you can't see it so it's not going to cause a problem.

The 6x9's I put in are kenwood 3 way.

In truth, don't really care how hard it is for them to fit the front ones- they say they've done it before on a Z and they're charging me enough for the experience. Apparently they are going to line the door panels with sound deadening foam and build an MDF baffle board on which they will mount the speakers. I know the Diamond ones are supposed to be pretty good (Alpine have them fitted in their demo car!) but it's costing me £260 for the front ones fitted!

It would be nice to have matching madness in the back - te he. The (Alpine) head unit is 4 x 60w and I don't think I'll bother with amps and subs if this sounds good enough.

£260 Cheeky gits  .

And they are cheating. They are raising the speaker out form the door by using the MDF (baffle board is just their way of making it sound good). This way they don't have to cut into the existing bracket.

Still, it should sound good though. :D

Well I know they're not the cheapest outfit on the block !

(They're catalogue price for supply of the speakers is £199 a pair), and I believe that the mdf is mounted in a recess so that the speaker isn't proud when fitted, so it sounded like £60 worth of fitting to me - cos I certainly can't be bothered to do it myself!

meanwhile, they don't have any welding kit, so your 6x9 rears solution is beyond their abilities. I think I'll have to go with smaller rears for now and think about the upgrade later.

(Unless you could pop over to my place in Manchester before Saturday morning and weld some plates in for me????? )

No??? - I guessed not!

:D :D

I'm always keen to help anyone so here's what I'll do.

If you want to send me your rear speaker brackets and the template for the speakers your want to put in the back(i.e. the carboard ring that should come on the box). I'll make to you some new 6x9 backets out of your old 6x4 ones.

All I ask is that you pay the P&P each way :D.

Jeez, I've always thought fitting car stereos was a licence to print money !

In fairness Andy - they do use the very best cables and so on - and their work is pretty impressively tidy. But I know I'm paying top dollar for the components. Check out the website though - there's some amazing installs on there (a bit OTT, but still interesting to look at) - visit

As for your very generous offer Stuart, I'm bowled over - the only catch is that I'm really not sure which bit I'd need to send you. The template from the new 6x9s will be no problem as I'll have the packaging from the front ones

How long would it take you to do this? and how complicated is the welding job (as I'll have to get this done by a Garage I know up here).

Can I buy you a beer?

Ok, if you take the rear speaker mouldings off, you will have a small 6x4 speaker sitting on a metal frame. You need to take most of the other panels off to get to this one, actually thinking about it you need to take all the rear mouldings off and the back seat will need to come out as well. Sounds like a wind up doesn't it, but honestly it's not. Actually thinking about this I may as well make up some fresh ones. Don't worry about sending my your old frames, just send me the 6x9 template you need. Contact me at admin@300zx-mods.co.uk and we'll sort out the address and P&P etc.

It will take me a few hours to make these for you as I'll need to check them against my car. The welding is the easy bit, it's the cutting and the moulding of the galv steel that's a pain in the butt :D

Of course you can ?
