Right, now that the beast in gonna have to have gearbox removed, new clutch fitted, core plugs fitted, all turbo water by-pass hoses replaced, I've got to thinking that now might be the time to finally bite the bullet and get the turbos done.

The offside turbo has smoked a wee bit from about a year after I bought it.. it went smokey-mad when I tried to fit the 3" straight though exhaust system of Mark's 300ZX a few years ago up at Johnny's place..

So it's always been an issue, and obviously stopped me gutting the cats for example, as it would do the same thing (I have a mongoose system on there).

So replacing the turbos would mean I could gut the cats, and get the JW chip, or the silvia nisssan job and get seriously more horses...

1) is it worth it (it's not got any worse smoking in 3 years, though I suppose eventually it will go).

2) if so, where is the best/cheapest place to get recon turbos ? or is it as cheap to get a set of turbo technics jobs or summit ?

3) will it be a simple job for them to just pop off the old ones and pop on the new ones.

Hi,

As it always seems like you find your answers after you've spent your money, I thought I'd let you know my experience as my Hybrids from Turbo Technics are going on at the moment! I phoned around and the cheapest bog-standard recon of a T25 (for my other car, but a T2 will be about the same) was upwards of £190 + VAT from Turbo Developments. I settled for hybrid T2 Hiflos for the 300 from Turbo Technics which have a 360 degree thrust bearing and uprated actuator and are good for 360 bhp, at a cost of £1272 inc VAT. A few days after hammering the plastic, I came across Jim Wolf Sport 500s at $2000 a pair - good for 500 bhp and at the current exchange rates equating to about £1300!!

Apparently it's possible to find second hand turbos for a couple of hundred pounds each but I've never come across any and would you trust second hand anyway? I've been looking for a second hand T3 off a 4WD Cossie for my 200 and haven't seen a single one yet, so if anyone can help, please post or PM me. Sorry Powerlord, didn't mean to hijack but someone might come up with something for you secondhand too.:)

If its smoking, get it sorted out, turbo failure ie impellor blade comes apart will literally destroy your engine.

Turbos are not something you can get away with doing cheaply im afraid, a decent set of ball bearing turbos are around £1700 and a decent set of JWT turbos ie sport 500's ect will set you back around £1300 on exchange,

to do the turbos you really need to remove the engine £700 give or take, depends whos doing it for you.

remember if your going to upgrade upgrade properly or youll pay for it dearly in the long run.

(been there done that lol)

360 degree thrust bearings are not a performance mod, no matter how many people tell you, they will allow for more reliablity but wont give more power. the only way to increase power with a turbo (over the turbos stock flow) is to increase flow, ie bigger impellors bigger housings ect.

Spot on about the 360 degree bearings 300z - If you're having to change your turbos because they're knackered, you want your next one's to be as reliable as possible. I was also told that although ball bearings can take higher loads, when they go they take out the whole turbo rendering it pretty irrepairable.
