Guys,

Ive found a leak in the passenger side cat so i need to replace it. But i thought it may be the perfect opportunity to decat.....

Basically i need to find out if theres any cheaper alternative then paying £250 squid for decat pipes. Mind my ignorance but i think its kinda expensive for some exhuast pipes. (sorry, another thread!)

A place in East London do all sorts of motors, mate told me they're charge 30quid a cat.... but u jus cant trust any old person these days, and the 300 aint just 'any old motor'......

Has any1 had any luck getting decat pipes cheap, any advice would be great!

Cheers

jaz

at no point in the MOT do you actually check the physical presence of a cat!! if its a vehicle that falls into a cat test then as long as it passes the emissions test it passes.

zeds, however, are not in the database for a cat test - so should be tested as a non cat vehicle ;)

They do a visual test. I know people who have had their car decatted with new pipes and failed because he said those pipes didnt have the cats on. Every year he changes then and puts them back. LOL

If you read a post I did later I admitted that the decat wouldnt make any difference so :p

Also, Warren I object you having a A10 Tankbuster plane on your sig.

At least get it accurate, it has to be bombing a British tank or Kurdish convoy to be true to life.

Good old John Robinson, of Performance Bikes fame.

He also wrote a book on motorcycle chassis tuning.....VERY clever bloke.

God rest his soul.

Why would you want more back pressure, the object of an exhaust is to remove the products of the combustion process.

The situation with 2 strokes may be a little different because they can rely on back pressure in certain places in order to create the standing pulses and scavenging effect that can help to move gas from one place in an exhaust to another.

There was a guy called John Robinson who wrote a number of books on motorcycle design, but he also covered both 2-stroke and 4-stroke engine theory. Always interesting reading ...

erm, well i'm an MOT tester & iv got the MOT inspection manual in front of me now, & nowhere does it state that you check for physical presence of a Cat, or that you can fail it if its not present ;)

id like to know under what section in the book the're failing it for then??

what about fitting the x pipe to ballance the exhaust, am led to believe this is required when decatting and fitting a new exhaust as it helps with the power and flow of the gasses.thought I'd ask cos am having a new system fitted next week and thats what i got told was a good mod on a zed.

i just gutted my cats seem to worked fine -mine is an na though i also advanced the timing slightly after doing this and seemed to gain some speed !

What about the H pipe or Balance pipe on the exhaust?

What does it do..all I can find is that it help reduce noise levels.

I would think that from the rear it would sound better having 3 cylinders firing through one exhaust and 3 through the other. I had a VW Van with a Rover V8 and that had two separate exhausts, one for one side of the engine (4 pots) and one for the other. I sounded f-in fantastic.

Is there any good reason why the same cannot be applied to the Z?

Oh, and another question going back to the cats. If you replace them with straight through pipe, what do you do with the sensors, just unplug them?

Incidentally, TOP Gear (not the TV show) in Burnley, Lancs. have quoted me £190 for CAT back in Stainless with twin pipes each side and no box's just pipe.

i would be careful as you might have the turbos working on two diff back pressures if the exhausts arnt excactly the same could be talking bs though

wtf...lol..where did u dig out this old thread from i posted it nearly a yr ago???
