hi, ive recently bought a 1990 tt, the first couple of weeks it was fine but today the speedo stopped working, then it came back, then went again and so and so forth. any ideas why and where to look? Also the HICAS light came on, the owners manual says to check the fluid, i have done this and it does appear to be overfilled, would this make the light come on?

I hope someone can enlighten me!

Do you lose your power steering too? If so its your speed sensor.......but the good news is its not an expensive job.

Is it a UK or a Jap Z?

Jap Z tend to have a speed converter on them to change KPH to MPH. If this fails the speedo stops working and usually the goes hard.

I think if its the speed sensor, the ignition light flashes 12 times or something.

It could also be just the speed is old. My one died. Take it apart and resolder all the old joints and it usually works. I am the only person I know of that it didnt :(

If you can tell us if any thing happens to the steering and if its a UK or Jap Z it will help us help you. ;)

Thanks guys, the car is a 1990 jap import and come to think of it the steering did become heavy. Where is this converter, is it easy to get to, and could a novice like me do the job?!

Thanks, Juke

The converter is attached to the back of the speedo. Its a little black box as I believe.

I dont know if it needs replacing or if the joints need soldering again.
