Watched someone do a three point turn in my car and noticed that the rear wheels didn't turn at all! Also the car's turning circle is is not much smaller than the Q.E.II 's.

 

Is my HICAS knackered?

 

The HICAS bulb works. However, I've yet to run a diagnostics.

I dont think they move if the car is not moving or it has to be moving a min speed before it does. And even then the wheels turn very little hardly enough to see it if you are not very close.

I think the Hicas only works at speed.

hicas only works at speed, its not like the honda 4 wheel steering,

the wheels only move 1%.

I'd always thought that Hicas kicks in at 30MPH or above:confused:

I think it depend on your speed in relation to the amount of turn, ie, it will come in at a lower speed if you give the steering a sudden yank if you swerve around something, but if you are just on a gentle curve it doesnt bother. Thats my theory anway!!

HICAS is Nissan's name for the 4 wheel steering system that is standard on the Twin Turbos. Unlike other manufacturer's implementations of 4 wheel steering, the Hicas system turns the rear wheels a very small amount (+/- 1 degrees or so) at the max. This sounds insignificant, but think about how badly most cars steer when their alignment is off a fraction of a degree. The hicas system has 3 modes, based on how fast you're travelling. It is turned off at speeds below 30 mph, so don't expect it to help you park. At some speeds, the system angles the rear wheels in the same direction as your front ones. At other speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction. Wacky stuff. No one really knows how much this helps the handling of the car.

yes the turning circle does seem a bit crap compared to the mk3 supra i had b4, also the low front end makes u wary of going over the curb

Theres been lots of debate on when HICAS comes on - I think Henri did a test quite a while ago with an LED hooked up to the system to see when it was on - it was used a lot more than was first thought at speeds lower than first thought too. I cant remember if it was on here or on tt.net.

Who's got that video where the camera is right on the back wheel, the Z is stationary and on full lock you see the rear wheel turn slightly.

Anyway-I was also under the impression that the hicas only kicked in at speed but this video proves otherwise.

The rear wheels moved slightly on full lock.

 

Personally, I never do three point turns. I just put it on full lock, back a quarter of a turn to avoid busting my steering Rack or bursting my PAS lines. Turn the traction control off and give it some wellie :D :D :D :D :D.

 

Maybe when I get my new wheels I'll start doing three point turns, but I've promised myself that I won;t get them until I need new tyres on the back LOL.
