Test Drive - centre console knock?

Just been for a test drive of a Z tt auto, the car looks the dogs, goes like stink but I had one reservation. From a standing start if I nailed it there was a knocking from the centre console, like a thudding noise. I couldn't reproduce it in higher gears but was definitely present from a start. What is this likely to be? My mate had a 2.8 capri that did exactly the same thing (I know theres no comparison!) it turned out to be the prop shaft bearing. If thats what it is how much is it likely to cost to get it sorted? Any help would be appreciated as I really liked the car in every other way

its prob the same!! centre prop bearing and/or rear gearbox mount

do a search!! :D

Defo centre bearing totally shafted:(

Personally Rod , I'd walk away.

To sell a car with a fault like that , well , fair enough you found out what it was .

Would make me think of all the other faults that are not so obvious!

Sorry if I'm being negative here but if this is your dream car and no other will do , then at least get it properly inspected, before you part with your hard earned!:D

Cheers,

F.T.

Hi sounds like centre bearing, i bought mine with the same problem, i think thats why the guy was selling it,so i told him it would cost a packet and he knocked off a grand!! cost to fix £200

result,! rest of the car is superb, and it is an easy job. if you got the gear you can do it yourself for even less..just make sure the rest of the car has been looked after..

Cheers for the help - I would walk away but i naively put a deposit down on the car and he has put an alarm on it at my request. Also and you'll probably all sympathis with this - I REALLY WANT IT!! Looks awesome, sounds awesome, drives brilliant. I WANT IT!! I WANT IT!! I WANT IT!!

ho-hum

Sedgeworth - where did you get that done?

Oh and Tony, I forgot to mention the car has been inspected by the RAC - just goes to show how thorough they are. I suspect that it would have been inspected better by the AA - a couple of drunks wandering round the car ;)

Buy it, and then claim they should have found it on their inspection and shaft them for a lot of money! Im sure a garage would be willing to bump up the claim but run the bill through as just that one problem. (whilst you actually have the prob fixed, and some nice extra goodies too :D)

Yeah I thought of that but just phoned the RAC to find out what sort of liability that they have for the inspections. They gave me a comprehensive fobbing off. Basically they have a cursory glace over the car for a wad in order for the garage to put an "RAC Inspected" sticker on the screen. When in fact it means a big fat diddly squat. Been to a few sites and the RAC seem to manage to squirm out of everything using all manner of excuses.

If you like the car so much, why don't you try and knock down the price? If the seller doesn't want to admit that the car has the certain problem, bring a mechanic to confirm it.

I might do that, but the dealer was getting a bit arsy with me. I told him about the problem he said it was a exhaust bracket that he could get fixed straight away, so he drove off came back half an hour later and said he'd got it fixed so we should deal with the paperwork. I said I'd like another drive to convince myself it was fixed, thats when he got shirty saying I'd already had a two drives of the car. Basically we went out again and he didn't reproduce the knocking but also didn't reproduce the cause ie the 'racing start'. But having put a deposit down I was having to hold back a little, and had I not have put the deposit down I would have walk (LESSON LEARNED!!). He said that he'd get his mechanic to have a look on monday (hmm strange I thought seeing as thats where I though he'd just been!). No doubt he'll tell me that the mechanic has told him that nothing wrong with it.

Any advice in how to respond?

will he provide you with some kind of warranty? most of the dealers do that even in used cars. If not, tell him to chuck in a warranty and you ahve a deal. This will sort it in case of a future problem, right?

As regarding you really wanting that car, i can understand the feeling. i am also about to buy one, so i know how you feel. :D

From my experience a warranty agreement might just be as well hanging up next to the bog:)

If sedgeworth gets back to me and lets me know where he got his done for £200 'am 'avin it!

:)

Hope all works good for you mate. :)

BTW it does have a 3 months warranty with it anyway.
