Right,

due to evil company benefits changing loads and us all losing our Company Fuel cards (grumble moan complain), and a really nasty clash with me moving miles away, going to have to get a second car as a general cruiser for heading to and from work.

50 miles each way from Warwick to Milton Keynes (will be when I've moved), that means running the Zed every day is *way* too much.. so, not selling the zed, and need something else, and need advice please.

I'll be honest, total snob when it comes to cars.. need something that's less than £10k *nice* to drive... reasonably quick, good motor way cruiser, decent fuel economy... how are R33 Skyline's on fuel?! :) (oh I wish!)

£10K is a lot of fuel in a Zed!

Tim

yeah... but I'm not coughing up £10k straight up.. likely be something on really really low monthly payments, company *is* compensating us for fuel, but the zed chews through loads...

also doing 100miles a day from warwick isn't fair on the zed.. wear and tear on tyres and brakes (tyre prices not nice) etc.

Somebody in the office just told me Skyline's make economical everyday cars.... economical for who?!?!? bill gates?!?

:)

That'll be a GTS then :D

Idly thinking away so posted the same question up on the GT-R club site.. just asking about fuel economy.. one chap has claimed 20-25mpg from a GT of some description anyway... and auto-trader lists them as £8,995..

I'm so tempted now... but just know I'd get one then find out they all lied about the fuel economy (or more likely I drive it like a nut permanently) and thus bankrupt myself.. have to sell a Kidney (would come before parting with the zx).. then have to move out of house and live in my Z!

oh yes.. and that's on an R33 GTS 2.5

I can certainly give you some advice on how *not* to do it ...

I bought a 4litre jeep as a second car (more for space than economy really) ... Doh!:D Missus likes it for shopping too (double Doh!)

It's fine for saving the miles on the Z (primary objective) and if any little scrotes get any ideas about driving into me again, as with the last Z, they're gonna regret it!!

But as for fuel .. it makes the Z look frugal on the run up the M20!!! Hehe ... still fun though, in a different kinda way!

As for a sub-10k decent alternative, I'd look for an S14 (late, low mileage) ... you can pick 'em up for way less money than 10k ... more economical than the Z - reckon on 28-30 on the m/way, and feckin excellent motor ... I had one before my first 300, and it's one of the best cars I've ever had ... fast & reliable.

Just my 2p ...

Okay now going to sound incredibly ignorant?!

S14? that a Nissan?

Hehe ... sorry mate, should have said ... it's the last iteration of the 200sx .. so yes, it is a Nissan ... good for 198bhp, rear-wheel drive and pretty well equipped ... check one out!

(I think they look nicer than a Skyline GTS, since these don't have the "brutal" appeal of the GTR - could be much easier to insure as well, although don't quote me on that).

HTH,

John.

Not really fussed about the insurance to be honest! :)

But yeah.. found a lot of 200sx's on Auto-Trader's site.. going to have a drive of one at garage that has a skyline too... presumably better fuel economy as well :)

Hi,no disrespect, but have you thought od something really sensibel? Like anAudi TDi or Passat TDi. Good thing is about runnig a diesel and someting the opposite of the Z is when you get in the Z it is such a difference it is great all over again. and

50mpg dosnt hurt either.

The only way a Skyline isn't going to cost much to run is by leaving it in the garage!.. ....and even then the battery will go flat or the tyres will crack or a bird will nest in it or your wife will reverse into it or you will find 26 refugees in the boot...

this may sound stupid but what about a non turbo'd Z i just got rid of my tt for a non turbo(dont ask its a long story:D ) and i cant believe the fuel difference its great on fuel easily 25mpg+ and still looks just as good then you have non turbo for work and twin turbo for play:cool:

I have an NA auto and i get about 160ish miles from the tank, this consists of driving low speeds to work (urban area) about 8 miles every day and 3 hard blasts of about 21 miles a week on dual carriage/country roads. That works out at about: 55litre tank = 12 gallons, 13.3 miles to the gallon.

Is this right????

Seems low to me for an NA auto? Or am i very heavy footed on the those 2 blasts - (usually redlining it in each gear)??

Barry

i have a manual na and blast it sometimes and drive normally other times and i get around 290miles per full tank of optimax

so either the auto's are much heavier on fuel or your right foot is very heavy:D

i have an AUDI TT for sale 1999 180 Lhd for 10k but needs new turbo and an oil pump. or it will be 14k with it all running sweet again. ;)

It's mad going for a skyline for everyday use if your trying to cut costs!!!

Why not go for a little fun MX5 or a Ford Puma or a Fiat coupe etc.

Geoff.

Semco32, if you are getting 290 off a tank where am i going wrong with my 160 per tank - using super plus (did not spot any difference when running a few tanks of optimax...)

Is it likely i have something wrong with the car?? What could it be, it seems a good runner, i have a little problem sometimes with the idling varying slightly but usually settles down to 750 ish after a short while...

I probably have a gear box mounting on the way out because at 40mph i get some vibrations...

These minor probs are unlikely to cause a problem?

Do i need it tuning perhaps??

Any thoughts anyone?

Barry

nelsonbd, i know nothing about cars but a service might help if its drinking fuel

I second the vote for an Audi / VW TDi. I get over 50 to the gallon on mine (750 miles per tank, and the tank is smaller than a Zed's).

Fairly boring to drive after the Z but very reliable and dependable (something that's pretty important if your other car is a Z). Mine has 110bhp and shedloads of torque, newer ones have 115 or 130bhp, engine wise its plenty fast enough. Can be picked up for 3k upwards depending on age.

I've spent the extra money I've saved on a Sat Nav system though to give me at least some fun. I'm looking forward to the sexy female voice "turn left at the next junction, go down at the next fork, would you like to lick my nipples?"

3rd vote for a Tdi. I use a 110 Passat Tdi as a daily driver (25K miles year). You can have them chipped for an extra 30BHP with very little difference in fuel economy. 130 Tdi can be had for less than 10K now.

Phil

Just come back from having fiddle about... was stunningly unimpressed by the Skyline R33, wasn't even that quick! Nissan 200SX was nice, but too similar to the zed, and I totally see the point about the it being good all over again as soon as I get back in the zx.

Have since been over to VW/Audi in bletchley... quite like the sound of an A4 diesel, and like you say, can't sniff at the fuel economy from that.

Was ordering a beamer 320 convertible before me and the missus decided to move house.. but might consider going back to one and just being poor! :)

Driving a good diesel is almost as good a driving a Z, in a funny sort of way. They have to be driven to be really appreciated and for a daily driver you cant beat them. If I won the Lotto I would probably still use a diesel day to day, mind you it would be an Audi A8 Diesel.

If I wont the lottery my Z would be my daily driver and my Lamborghini Diablo would be my fun car. ;)

Stuart

mmmm I'd forgotten all about the A8... lurrrvely car.. always fancied an S8.

Any idea what mpg you get out of the A8 diesel?! Actually the old Audi Cabriolet is nice... oh bum...

What sort of sat nav system you getting stuart!?! Just get some girl to sit next to you reading a map and getting you off from time to time...

oh hang on... women.... map reading....

problem looms! :)
