Hi , I've a bog standard 300zx TT Manual Uk model 130,000 miles, I want to up the boost and was thinking of installing the Superchips ECU and wastegate nipples to up the boost. Is this upgrade ok?

Am also thinking of changing the standard exhaust to the Scorpion unit as my present original unit is rusting badly.

Thanks.

Hi,

Not to put you off or anything but I have had my car about 2 months, 300zx UK TT 144,000miles, 42,000miles on new lump.

Chipped it one month ago and turned the boost up (JWT CHIP), I have since had a bill for £520 for a new gearbox oil pump and torque convertor and now I need two new turbos which will cost at least a grand.

Unless you have the money ready (or a second car) dont up the boost IMO.:o

Cheers Paul, where can I get the jwt or se chip upgrade

not being funny or anything, but how do you know they wernt on the way out anyway?!!? ;)

many on here are running higher boost (me included) without probs.

hope you get yours sorted :)

Hi Paul,

I diddnt know for definate they werent going but how can you possibly tell when buying a car?

The best you can do is check the turbos sound sweet and theres no smoke........I guess its pot luck with all cars.......

Guess I am just warning jon just in case he thinks the cars are an easy ride.....:)

you cant!! in the same way you cant say upping the boost pressure slightly caused them to fail. (you didnt run at like 3 bar did you?? :D LOL!!)

Jon

My Z has 123K on it and it is a manual. Manuals are known to be stronger than the autos.

I am running a JWT at 1 Bar, or atleast I was up until a month a go until my clutch stanted slipping like mad but mines in having an RPS as we speak. I've been using the chip for nearly a year and aside from the extra power and the grin across my face, I haven't noticed any difference in fuel consumption or any funny sounds from under the bonnet.

My Z was predominately a motorway car in its earlier life so I take that in to consideration. Most of its owners have been over 40 so I guess that has helped it stand the test of time.

But now that I've said that, mine will probab;y blow up next week. Quick, someone find me a piece of wood!

130,000 Miles!

Is it a minter? Does the engine run sweet as a nut? Has it had a cambelt change recently? How about the turbos, are they original?

I, personally, would be very wary of tuning a Zed with that kind of mileage, unless you of course know the history of the car.

It's okay people on here saying 'I've done 250,000 miles and its's okay' but you are potentially opening up a whole heap of open wallet surgery stressing a car with that kind of miles under it.

Just my opinion - Don't say we didn't warn you!

Tim

I must say that the only reason that I decided to tune mine slightly was:

1) I knew the car had a new engine at 104,000 miles for £7500

2) I knew I would have to pay out for a new engine with simple mods (in theory).

I aggree with Tim, tuning an high milage car without the wallet ready is asking for trouble, IMO.

Take it from someone who has learnt..........:o

Damn, cant edit posts, 2nd reason should say

"I knew I wouldn't have to pay out for a new engine with simple mods (in theory)."

You know what I mean....

;)

And I would say that upping the boost on my car definately helped the old turbos to fail....or in other words, diddnt help the longevity....

I agree that any form of tuning is going to cause wear on components, but then again, so does any driving you may do anyway!!

all im saying is i dont believe that upping the boost a little was the primary cause of your gearbox/turbo faults within 1 month ;)

Hi Paul,

I agree, but it diddnt help.......;)

I think your right, they were probably on their way out anyway but theres no way of telling this from new.

Like Tim said, if this guy starts upping boost on a 130,000 car. the odds are stacked against him in regards to keeping his wallet packed with paper....I thiknk we'd all agree on this....:)

FWIW my 30,000 mile car lunched the autobox under a month after the boost being raised. The turbos are still going strong (albeit a little smokey) 35,000 miles later though.

Yeah the biggest weekness in the cars is the gearbox - Manuals have clutch probs and auto's seem to lunch themselves within weeks of going over the stock power. TBH I think the case above WAS caused by the power increase - on both parts! The turbos were probably already on there way but at stock power could well have lasted a good 20k miles more - up the strain on them and thats it... bye bye time...

All IMO ;)

CheerZ,

Andy

Cheers everyone for advise.

Luckily mines a manual gearbox, I had the cambelt replaced recently, always when i buy a new car, i have that done if I cant see it on the service record.

Its been regularly serviced and most miles I think where on the motorway.

Does anyone know where i can get the jwt chip upgrade?
