A newly imported zed ( 1 week) was in the workshop today for full 60k service, the new owner having concidered the service level to be...unconfirmed.
To say this owner has saved himself some serious heartache by getting the belt done before using the car is an understatement, this is in fact despite an engine label confirming a belt swap.
Front engine noise was evident when pulled in and as the distmantling proceeded more was revealed. The belt had in fact been changed but quite what the fitter was doing is a mystery.
The belt tension was......erm non! the belt had been flapping about most likely a cause of the noise or at least part of it.
Then as more was removed and as the pic 1 shows the belt tensioner was completely shut? my first thoughts were the main body of the adjuster was wrongly positioned and not allowing the tensioner to move out fully, but that did not account for the belt slackness?
Pic two reveals the cause the hydrolic part of the tensioner was fine but the actual normally free moving pivot arm was seized solid, even in a vice it was difficult to move, so the tensioner pin had no chance.
The worry is that the belt was installed this way as the tensioner was fuly in and must have been seized when the new belt was fitted!!
This is not the end either, the right hand lower jockey pulley was also seized and the belt had been skidding over it instead of spinning it, this is where the belt slackness had helped slightly by not burning the belt out.
It is a to the owners credit for thinking before he even bought the zed to book it in for a 60 k service some time ago, other than this it`s a pucker motor and it would of been a shame to of broken it!!
On a lighter note when doing a check around found it has a genuine Blitz ecu fitted..Niceeee
