Brake pipes over the transmission need replacing. Local garage

reckons anything in region of £1000 - £3000. I do not have the time, proper space or facilities to fix it myself. Mechanically sound (fsh, stick, alloys, Thatcham 2, K reg.) and she is a UK car. Maybe someone would like to buy her for fixing (Or spares... but please don't tell me that, I'd hate think of her being broken up). Perhaps

there's an enthusiast who would like to fix things for me?

what? £1-3K for replacing a brake pipe or two?

Is that all that's wrong with it?

I'd get a second opinion if I were you, they have to be pulling your pisser. Either that or I'm in the wrong business.

Mechs showed me under the car. Looks like the rear transmission

needs to come down to get to all the locations. That means exhaust down too. Kinda rusty under the back end so goodness

knows what else would be found. Nuts/bolts damn difficult to shift, very likely causing other damage. This is a small village - I do'nt the guys are trying it on; they would'nt survive long in rural Yorkshire. Used to do car work in the past, this does look fearsome.

For a fraction of that price you could get new end-to-end Goodrich hoses made up and route them by the most appropriate method to bypass the old rusty ones. There's a couple of people on here in your approximate area that may be able to help or direct you to a local company.

Listen to Andy P!

For that kind of money I'll come up to your from Kent and do it. But seriously, you'd only expect to get charged £500 to pull an engine what you're talking about may be a PITA but it's not £1K worth!

Not front end prob.

Followed Andy P link and found v. helpful gent (whose name I omitted to get) at Zedworld who suggested going thro' boot from

ABS unit and making additional holes as needed. Taken car

back to local man who'll do that.

Thanks to all.

My black despair has now turned to red hope.

(I had a garage specially built to house a new Cougar but

bought the Zed instead: it's never been in the garage as it's

too good to hide away.)

Of course, if the original purchaser had had it undersealed then I

would'nt have these problems now.

Ho hum, need to get the hang of the line breaks.

WTF! I had a complete replacement of my brake pipes last year, rear axle remove to get to the rears:eek: Nissan did this and the whole bill came to £250 inclusive of VAT.

Well you know what these rusty UK spec models are like ! LOL :D

And they say that the Jap spec ones are not undersealed - what rot (sic) LOL :D

Definitely get a 2nd opinion on the work required.

Most UK Z's have quite a bit of rust underneath, but very rarely is it so bad that its not an economical repair. I have taken a few UK Z's apart and it is normal for half the bolts to shear and to find plenty of rust.

I'm sure I can supply everything you need second hand at a good price.

My advice is get plenty of opinions from different mechanics until you're confident as to where you stand. You're right not to start throwing money at it though.

If you are unlucky enough for the rust to be too bad to make it worth repairing then I'd be willing to buy it off you. But only do that as a last resort.

Thanks

When I had my clutch changed it was exhaust off and gear box completely off and that only cost £100, and considering according to my car history, my mongoose exhaust cost £50 to fit. It shouldnt cost more than that to take it off and taking it off is harder.

LMFAO!!!!! £3k!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we charge £62.50 per hour at my garage, which is probably a little more expensive than most "local" garages as were a mercedes garage.

im gonna ignore the cost of the pipes, cos it really is negligable compared to £3k!!

anyway, at our labour rate that amounts to 48hrs labour!!!

thats a complete working week including overtime on saturday morning & 4 days in the week!!! (well the mechanic would need friday lunch to himself after that job!!!) :D :D

Erm sorry andy but IMHO you should ALWAYS use new pipes when replacing hard brake lines - over time the pipe becomes brittle and cracks when you remove it. New piping will cost bugger all - could even be a simple DIY job if you bought a flaring kit.
