Right, I'm getting my first test drive today...

And I need to know what to expect, so I can hopefully have and idea if this Zed is healthy or not...

1)

What's the power delivery like?

In my previous cars I went from an 8v to a 16v and I thought the 16v was broken at first till I hit 5000rpm then it goes mad.

What's the power curve like on a Zed TT, when do the turbos start to boost and what at what speeds does it go best?

Do you get a kick and get pinned back into the seat, or is it a smooth building power delivery?

2)

I know to check the boost gauge actually goes into the right hand side when giving it some, what should the other gauges be showing ie. Water temp, oil temp? pressure? etc..

3)

Handling

I've heard the back end of these cars can kick out due to HICAS, how noticable is it and does it scare you the first time it happens? ;)

Also do they tend to understeer or do they like to oversteer?

I know about the power on oversteer (any one with a brain knows a RWD with lots of power may try to swap ends in the wet.) But do you get a warning before it goes, or is it facing one way then the next second facing the other way?

Do you have to be "really" silly in the wet to do it, or is it very easy to do?

4)

Auto box

Yes it's the auto questions again ;)

The autobox on my granny was pretty jerky on gear changes and would lurch from one gear to the next, whereas a Merc I went in was so smooth you couldn't even feel the gearchanges.

What's the Zed's autobox supposed to be like?

If the UK car doesn't have a power button does it have kickdown?

Sorry for all the questions but I need to know what to expect when I look at this car in a couple of hours :)

Eric glad you found the car cool , I'm well impressed with your posting count ( 80 before even buying it:D ) All posts were interesting though , answered a few questions I had but forgot to ask. I'm from Bristol originally and go back a few times a month , I'll let you know next time , maybe meet with a few other Bristol Z heads!

Cheers

Phil

i had the same experience with a few test drives . i had a nissan 200sx S13 and when i drove the auto tt 300 i got out and walked away with out even speaking to the guy , i was that dissappointed tbu then i drove the 300zx and thought wow. the different is ( wat i think anyway ) is the torque of the v6 kinda drowns out the kick in of the turbo as the 200sx would spin the tyres in 3rd in the dry it u booted it and the turbos kicked in but with the 300 its very smooth and progressive so i dont think i have ever thought wow when booted it until its round a corner and u are facing the kurb on the opposite side. My advice i can give u is if u want balls out acceleration feel then go for the 200sx as that pins u back in your seat btu if u want power and speed that would make u sh*t yourself when u look at the speedo hen get thwe 300 . just my opinion so i will probably get linched for saying the 200 feels so much quicker

It's probably the same as saying my VTS felt as fast as when the Zed was in Overdrive.

It's not by a long shot I would guess, but it's smaller and lighter so it feels more responsive and perky.

After driving the 300 properly last night I have nothing but respect for the power!

It is so powerful, but you don't always notice the speed because the car is so well designed inside you feel unruffled and relaxed.

Not what I'm used to when going for the new landspeed record, but after last night I found the Saxo felt lively, but ultimately underpowered and uncomfortable.

Roll on 300ZX time! :D:D:D

Now that is really funny because I went out to buy an S14a, I looked for an age, eventually found one that I thought was a good 'un. Took it for a spin and was so dissapointed with the performance that I just gave up on the idea, not to mention the claustraphobic cabin!

About 3 months later i took delivery of a proper car with 6 cylinders and 2 turbos. :D Only kidding guys, S14 is very nice just too slow in standard guise.

Tim

When I wrapped my first S13, I test drove and S14, and the S13 did feel much quicker, probably because of the Turbo lag.

Mike

but i have to admit i am a sucker for the old skool turbo lag. dont think there was a day that went by where the rear end of the S13 wasent trying to over take the front end , wet or dry . but the good thing was that it was so controllable when it went out .

AAAAHHHHHHH memorys

think i might get another one and have it purley as a drift car:D :D :D

I have to agree with bluntbrother, I still own my 200 and have the 300 as well and the 200 aint no slouch against it, and feels faster. Thats why I was a little disappointed with the Z, but saying that, now I have modded to the same sort of mods on the 300 as the 200 has it leaves it pretty easily.
