My Zed, (stock import), has a turbo timer fitted and it was set to 20 second when I purchased it. It was reset when I changed my battery so I set it to 20 seconds. But I saw another thread where someone was using 60seconds.

What do others use? What would you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

IMO any decent turbo timer would be directly reliant upon either the water or oil temp - I don't know whether any decent turbo timers are made !!

I know there are some that try to guesstimate the time based on the way in which the car has been driven over the past couple of miles, but that is not quite the same thing.

Hi there, the time that should set it can vary. If you have given the car a right good pasting then you should increase the time on the timer( for example a motorway journey, i would set it at 2 mins), for normal driving i would recommend 30 secs.

Hope thats useful.

I was comparing notes with a TRD MR2 owner the other week (after I kicked his a$$ on the dragstrip :D) and he showed me his Turbo Timer - every time the boost passes a certain pressure whilst driving the timer adds 1 to the digital display. Then at the end of the journey, ignition key out and the timer counts down from whatever figure it reached before cutting the idle.

Sounds a failsafe way of judging how long to leave it. Didn't catch the make etc but I'm sure it was a popular brand.

Is this a pretty standard type, or does it cost loads more?

Hmm, agreed with AndyP here, automatic turbo timers should really work from an oil temp. reading from the oil out from the turbos, dont see quite why nobody makes something like that cos it would actually be reliable.

Don't have a turbo timer though so can't tell you how long it should be on for, id go for 60 seconds though.

I got a HKS one and yeeh like annd said really, i leave mine on auto and depending on how fast and hard the cars been driven it automaticaly sets itself a time, when i was cruising along once at about 150mph the count down timer was on nearly 3mins but if your just poodling around town it normally stays on about 30secs good little toys really they will save the turbos in thre long run

cheers

Marc;)

I have a Razo timer with two countdowns you can set yourself (e.g mode 1: 30secs/ mode 2: 7 minutes) or 2 automatic modes SP and EP. After a hard run the countdown in SP mode can be between 3 minutes+ and 1 minute, however switch to EP mode after the same run and the coundown is between 1.5 minutes and 50 seconds! I'm not sure what the difference is between the two modes or where they take the info from (all the Razo timer instructions I've found are in japanese).

Funny you should mention timers 'cause I was given an APEXi one off someone at work this morning 'cause he recons it's not compatible with his Fiat toupe. Anyway it is wired to the o2 wire on the ecu to calculate cooling time. By the way, it was only 70 quid delivered from E J Performance & it looks mega easy to fit.

I fitted a Blitz one and it took all of 5 minutes to do as it came with a Z harness.

Only problem with them is they stop your alarm arming until the engine switches off so you still have to sit there and wait!

There are ways to wire it in to work OK but I don't know anyone who has done it here on a Z.

Dear All,

Many thanks for all the replies most helpful, I intend to increase the cut out time on mine as 20 secs seems too short.

I was astonished that no one came onto this thread and complained how boaring or trivial it was or maybe the whingers were too busy doing meaningful and important things.

I kinda don't get the point of them unless you can get it to work with your alarm. You might aswell get in the habit of taking it easy on the last few miles of your journey and then let it idle for however long.

Does anyone know if insurance problems are ok with turbo timers. I know a few years ago one insurance company had a problem with remote starting on a car - kinda the same thing.
