Airbag Warning Light

My 300zx '92 Airbag Warning Light is blinking. The dealer said I should change the "Airbag Module" (That's very expensive).

Some Idea about this issue? Could be another solution?

Gus, there is a self dignostic system built in for you to check the system out or alternatively Nissan can do it it on their Consult system.

To do it yourself follow the instructions below.

There are three test modes.

A) User mode ( normal running )

B) Present diagnostic mode ( problem code present now)

C) Initial diagnostic mode ( original problem code if more than 1)

All tests require you have the drivers door wide open.

User mode

1) Turn on the ignition but do not start the engine

2) Air bag light on for 7 seconds then off...all ok

3) Air bag light on for 7 seconds then flash.....fault present

Present diagnostic mode

1) Turn on the ignition but do not start the engine

2) Depress the door interior light switch more than 5 times, this must be done within 5 seconds of the ignition been switched on.

3) Look to the air bag warning light a long flash will be followed by quicker flashes this is the present code.

Make a note of any flash code.

Turn off ignition and wait 1 minute

Initial diagnostic mode

1) Turn on the ignition but do not start the engine

2) Depress the door interior light switch one time this must be done within 5 seconds of the ignition been switched on.

3)Look to the air bag warning light a long flash will be followed by quicker flashes this is the original fault code.

As there are so many codes once you have the results return back and post on this thread and will check out the anwers.

There is a tunnel sensor and a safing sensor combined with the actual air bag module that only leaves a wiring fault.

Let me know the results of your test.

I hope this information can help you.

Thanks

Gus the two flash code does confirm the system has a fault as reported by the Nissan test.

Two Flashes in present diagnostic mode =

The circuit for the air bag module is out of order.

Repair order

1) Visually check the wiring harness to the air bag and control module

2) Replace the spiral cable

3) Replace the air bag module (must be deployed before disposal)

4) Replace the main harness

The sensors are mounted on the transmission tunnel behind the radio and the air bag control unit is fitted at above the blower motor on the passenger side, the spiral cable is the section that goes up to the steering wheel.

Danger notice!!

Be aware that the bag could deploy if activated accidently when checking the various parts and injury could be substained always leave for at least 20 minutes after switching ignition off to ensure no charge is left in the control unit.

Hope this helps
