Bad compression test results

As follows:-

1: 182psi 3: 162psi 5: 176psi

2: 178psi 4: 155psi 6:158psi

 

Did a wet test on 3 of the lower ones (had no blimmin oil left in me bottle to do others!) : 3:approx 200psi, 4: approx 182psi, 6: approx 172psi.

 

I also feel that 5 was probably a wet test as when i took the spark plug out there was a little puddle of oil in there?!

 

Diagnosis? Are we talking teaching the evil bugger a lesson with a baseball bat or lightly rubbing it better?

 

I might try it again tomorrow see if i get the same results but the low ones i did repeat a couple of times anyway to make sure.

You're actually within spec, according to the TTnet FAQ, apart from the max difference between cylinders - there should be a max diff of 14psi, and you've got a max diff of 27psi..

 

Maybe the higher cylinders were a little wet, hence the really high results on cyl 1, for example?

 

I wouldn't be overly concerned if I were you - you've certainly got no really low values on there..

Robtor the difference between the first cylinder and the last cylinder tested can be difficult to keep totally acurate as the speed of the turn over can be effected by the battery becoming exausted form the previous turn overs.

 

This is why it is best to have all plugs out at the same time and have the throttle wide open and keep the tests as close to each other as possible

 

Your figures look reasonable but be aware a streched cam belt can effect valve timing and give odd figures.

Thanks for the quick replies, possibly not as bad as i thought.

 

U think there's a possibility cam belt can affect this Jeff? I've got one of those dodgy unmarked ones you posted a pic of recently, but it's only about 3-4 months and about 2-300miles old!

 

Could head gasket be the cause of these results?

I also recently got mine tested! These are the results> problem is i dont know what the units are?

 

 

Low test-held High test-held

1: 90 - 72

2: 90 - 84

3: 90 - 71

4: 90 - 85

5: 90 - 65 - been told got sticky valves

6: 90 - 53 - " " rings & piston f**'d

 

Does this make sense guys? just thought it would be good to have a second opinion.....but, again i dont know anything bout the units and how its done:confused:

Rob, as you say the timing belt was changed it may well have some bearing as the belt may have been installed incorrectly.

 

Other than removing the cam belt covers and checking the cam timing I think you need to start the tests again and in a more controlled manner.

 

1st ensure the battery is fully charged and if not charge overnight.

 

start engine and run for at least 10 minutes to warm through

 

Jam the throttle wide open and remove all the plugs.

 

Remove the fuse for the fuel pump (small black oblong box drivers side by bonnet hinge) and disconnect the cas unit. (double sure of no fuel input then)

 

test the cylinders with the previously low results first.

 

Hopefully the results will be more acurate and an appropriate course of action can then be taken

 

Hope that makes sense.

 

Oh and if you are suspicious of the head gasket leaking between cylinders do the test agin and only remove the plug in one cylinder at a time to see if there any changes in any two cylinders next to each other.

I did the test again today starting from the piston i did last thus reversing the order. Also i disconnected the cas which i didnt do before.

Results as follows:

1: 173 3: 170 5: 162

2: 168 4: 170 6: 173

Fair amount better than before i feel.

Max difference of 11PSI.

 

IS it safe to assume all is ok in this department?

What made you do the test???? :confused: If there isn't a problem don't worry yourself ;)

 

One other point - if you are worried about the battery voltage dropping, it can be usefull to 'jump' off another running car - this will also give a good cranking speed. The main thing is to keep the conditions the same every time as a basic compression test is only a relative guide.

I'm worried i might have a slightly nackered head gasket, i have been losing some coolant and i havent noticed any leaks.

Would it be ok to put some of that dye stuff in the coolant so you can see if it's leaked anywhere?

 

Anyway i plan on changing the oil at the weekend so ill check for signs of water in it and i might do the coolant too so i can check for oil.

 

Any other tests worth doing?

Thinking about a leak down test but am not to sure how to do it and get the pressure in there.

Have you had any work done recently???

I changed the cambelt about september time, trying to fix another problem (car struggles to rev over 5500) as it was suggest the belt being a tooth out could be the prob.

After this took the car for a spin and it was over heating a bit as i didnt do the coolant properly, think there was a bubble. Worried this nackered the head gasket.

 

 

Otherwise no.
