More help please!

My Zed has been a pretty good little runner (!) for several years now but she is begining to cough and splutter!

I took her in for a Consult test at my local and friendly Nissan dealer, and the tech ran some tests, pulled some faces, and tutted. His verdict? I wouldnt get this place to do fix it, if I were you mate!

At least he was honest!

My problem: Running awefully rich all the time, when cold wants to stall when pulling up to a stop, and also when cold, cuts out dead when booting it. Some times it will come back to life after a second or two, sometimes its dead for a minute or two! Its definately an electrical cut as its instant. I also get the engine missing (more when cold but still sometimes when hot) between idle and 2000 - maybe beyond that but I simply cant notice it. This is all compounded by an excessive vibration (intially thought to be suspension related!) at certain rev ranges

His opion was (based on consult and experience) that the knock sensor was faulty, and that there were various air leaks in the inlet manifold and exhaust system prior to the Lambda sensors. (the Lambdas were working fine apparently, but they could be confused by air leaks - sounds reasonable to me.)

Anyway, bottom line is this - is the Knock sensor the same as the Det sensor? If so can this be properly fixed engine in car? Can I also change the various gaskets with engine in?

I am reasonably confident to do the work myself, but if its major, then I probably havent got the time and hence would need a decent garage to do it for me...any recomendations and ideas on cost?

The car is a J reg auto import.

Cheers guys - another long post - sorry!

PS Whats up with the site - first time I go in I get a message telling me the server isnt up to scratch, then if I click home it all works fine! Bizzare!

pretty sure hes been smoking something ;)

the det sensor can be smashed to hell and it would not cause the mixture to be out.

Id say its almost deffinatly an O2 sensor or both of them. Have you done a normal ECU diag? Does it get code 34?

Never heard of air leaks in the intake manifold either

If its missing then you might have a problem with the PTU, try cleaning out every connector int he engine bay with electircal contact cleaner, they can be a real problem sometimes.

You can change the intake manifold gaskets with the engine in, but it will cost a fortune, removing the plenum means all new EGR tubing and all that. Exhaust manifolds would be very difficult to impossible to do with the engine in.

Mark,

You're not that far from me (nr Great Dunmow), if you want to bring the car over I'll take a look. I'm reasonably confident that we could eliminate a couple of the problems without too much trouble.

PM me if you're interested, especially if you want to do it today.
