I was wondering about looking at RX7 turbos as well as 300ZXs.

Anyone had one/Driven one?

What are they like for reliability because I've heard some horror stories?

I don't car too much about the 16mpg I just don't want too many £2000 repair bills.

I've also heard they NEED an engine rebuild at 60,000 miles!

Any thoughts?

Nico's the bloke to speak to, he has a Z & RX7 (bastard).

He's not on here much nowadays but probably lurking lmao

He can afford to maintain both!!!

*kin 'ell!!! :p

No. :D

Didn't think so, or he'd be driving a Ferrari! :P

A few things I found out about the RX7 after wanting one.

Not as powerful as the 300ZX about 260bhp but they are a hell of a lot lighter which helps.

The 0-60 is slightly better than the Z.

If you think a ZX tail happy the RX7 is even worse.

I heard they needed a rebuild ever 80,000 miles when I asked on other forums, no one really denied it.

Apparently the NEED to red lined every now and then to get rid of carbon deposits on the rotary.

Boot size is small, lot smaller than the Z.

They look like a MX5 from a distance ;)

The power vairies a lot, the really fast ones where never released over here and are very expensive and virtually still new in Japan now.

No T-Tops, which I love on the Z :D

My thoughts are that the ZX is a sports touring, and the RX7 is a sports car, sacrifising comfort and room for performance.

I agree about the T-tops, I can't wait till my first summer in the Z :D

Oh and air con.... Mmmmm No more sweating in the Saxo stuck in traffic jams :D:D:D

I agree also about the GT and sports car bits, the RX-7 looks hardcore all the time, the ZX looks like it can help you relax in comfort whilst still becoming hardcore at will with some throttle.

Bets of both worlds.

RX does look cool though...

The car accessories stores in Singapore and Malaysia loves the RX7 owners.. as they are repeated buyers of Fire Extinguisher.. God Bless....:D

I have an RX-7, unfortunately the old shape though. I go to some of the RX-7 club meets so know a lot of people with the new shape. Break downs are very very rare. I fact I don't know of any amongst the club since I joined two years ago. They handle better than the Zed and have a simillar power to weight ratio.

The best thing is that the engine is the same physical size as a hyabussa so there is loads of room in the engine bay for mods. In fact the more you put in it the emptier it looks.

Get a test drive or few. And don't believe the bullsh1t, slagging something off you don't understand makes people feel important!!!

there's just something a bit "cloned" about the RX7's looks and appearance... it might just be me, it's already been said here it does look a fair bit like an MX5 from a distance, not necessarily a bad thing Mx5's are very pretty. RX7's performance is fantastic.. but... there's something lacking in the character and looks... Z's do it for me everytime over the RX7, at least you can't mix a Z up with something else.

Me and Tony commented when mine was being towed up onto the RAC lorry on sunday (to go to zedworld, see numerous posts about buggered cambelt), there's no way the looks of the Z are 13 years old.. but it is, it could stand right next to pretty much any brand new sports car and still look new.

One of my friends actually thought mine was the new 350Z he'd been hearing about, then when pointed out it was 13 years old he had a fit.. then I showed him the 350's pic and he decided that it looked too much like a TT and they should have done more with the Z32.

Ah well.... like the others say.. if you wanna sports car, RX7 is great.. but there's something about a Z :)

Personally I want both ;) But then, I'm never happy.. :D

Love the looks of the RX-7, possibly more than the looks of the Z, which I do think is starting to look a little dated (in stock form)..

I do also have a thing about engines that rev to the moon and back, having owned a couple of cars like that previously..

(dons flame retardant suit and stands back)

Anyhow.. :D

always seem to remember those mad honda civic's had stupid rev's 10k plus....

I love the look of the Rx-7, handling is sublime if a little edgy on the limit. The only reason I didn't buy one is I couldn't fit in it! (I'm 6ft 5) 300zx is a good bit quicker mid-range than an Rx-7, and a little less fragile, it also has more of a supercar look about ask IMHO, whereas thr Rx looks more like a sports car.

Thanks for your advice guys,

I have decided on the Zed, because I think that it just looks harder! and I think the interior looks nicer.

The Nissan looks more menacing and more supercar-ish :D

The RX-7 is a stunning motor though, but they just don't excite me as much of the thought of a Z.

:D :D :D

I like the looks of some of the modded RX7's, there's one around where I live and it looks stunning.

But I have to say, if this makes sense, they do look very Japanese!!

Cheers,

F.T.

They are also a bit too "Fast & Furious" for me.

But I must admit the black z with chrome wheels I see every lunchtime in Bradley Stoke could have come straight from F&F and it looks awesome! :D

any idea who that belongs to!?

Eric,

not wanting to sound like an old man but have you owned a rear wheel drive turbo car before? Or even a quick car?

The reason I ask is not to insult your driving but just to say that I think I would be quite intimmidated by the 300ZX if I was used to driving a saxo. The difference is huge and in the wrong hands can be a lethal weapon!

I am sure your a cool driver but just asking thats all...;)

kind of a point worth making though... I like to think of myself as a pretty good driver (we all do!).. but working in Milton Keynes provided me with a surprise.... 300zx... rear wheel drive... auto... twin turbo... no traction control... milton keynes = land of roundabouts.... nice wet roads.... EEEEEEEK!!!

It can be a handful... needs to be treated like any supercar, with respect in swathes... saying that though.. it's a lot better behaved than the Supra!

I've said it before though... very few things in life will stick a smile on your face like the kick down from a Zed at full boost ;)

Too right lee, cant wait to get mine back tomorrow, loads more BHP and more of a kick!!:D :D

funny that... just desperate to get mine back and drive it.. and got to part with it again in a few weeks because of getting exhuast/lights/spoiler done at Zed Centre... your pour tonnes of cash into them and then they spend ages at the garage having your various improvements carried out!

Cheeky begger! :p

I may have a Saxo but I'm not an 18 year old spotty kid anymore! ;)

No offence taken, I love speed and power, but I love my life and other peoples lives more.

Therefore I'll treat the ZX with the respect it deserves.

I know the ZX is "a bit" :p more powerful than my mighty Saxo with it's knee trembling 120BHP! But I'm sure I'll learn more about the Z whilst driving and not push the boundries till I know the car inside out...(Even then I won't be pushing boundries much as I'm sure the Zed's boundries are higher than mine!)

Thanks for your concern anyway :p

Oh BTW: The Saxo isn't about raw power or torque (it doesn't have any) it's about gearing and handling, it has perfect gearing and it also redlines at 7250rpm, for a N/A 1.6 thats pretty good.

Due to the cam profile it doesn't come on cam till 5000rpm, peak torque is at 5500rpm and it redlines at 7000rpm.

That means when booting it you are always on cam after first gear and hitting peak torque in every gear.

That along with it's weight of 940kg explains the speed figures.

With a turbo or Supercharger the Saxo can be a monster, (although they invaribly don't last long) 250+BHP in a VTS will see 0-60 in the high 5s -low 6s (would be better but it's a FWD with no traction control)and a top speed of around 140mph before the limiter is reached in fifth.

Not bad for a little 1.6 shopping trolley

:p

I would just prefer to have a car designed to do that out of the box and have all the other creature comforts like leather and air con, so I'm getting a ZX :D

Oh and I want turbos... :p

I'm not trying to say a Saxo can be as good as a ZX, it won't.

Given enough money anything can be made to go as fast, but will it be as nice to look at and drive as a Zed?

I don't think so :D

AndyD, the fella who bought my previous 300zx went from Saxo VTS to 300zx and he loved it... shame buying a house got in the way and he had to sell it .. well not a shame for the guy who bought it though;)

Get a 300zx twinturbo - it is the best value for money supercar on the planet.

Just get a manual eh..! ;)

Oh not another person telling me not to buy an auto! ;)

The manual's are rare as feck and to be honest with that much torque and power I doubt the auto is a hardship to drive.

Also a lot of my driving is heavy traffic so a heavy clutch will p*ss me off pretty quickly.

I had an auto Scorpio and I loved the autobox, so easy to cruise, then floor it and kickdown was cool :D

The only problem was the gear selection could be a little ropey sometimes, dropping down a cog or going up just when you didn't want it.

But in traffic...Fantastic :)

Hi Eric

Glad to see you're still looking to go for the Z (and also still re-educating the masses about the saxo!!!;) )

I still have to wait a few weeks before I can afford one - I haven't really started looking in earnest yet because I dread I'll find the perfect Manual and won't be able to go for it!!!

Also still on the lookout for anyone who would be kind enough to share their knowledge to help me buy a pukka Zed.

Good luck with your search!

Hi bud,

Good luck on finding the perfect manual! ;)
