As some of may know, I'm going to picking up my zed next week, only problem being it arriving in Southampton - it'll cost a fortune to have it delivered to London!!

Only idea I have so far is to book an MOT near home and drive it back - I think this is legal, even the girl at the port suggested this. Of course having no plates will attract a lot of attention and I'll probably get pulled over a fair few times :(

So... does anyone know where I can get trade plates that will be valid for the day or week? Or better ideas?

Thanks in advance,

James

I got a car delivered from Newcastle dock to Scotland for approx £100, cant imagine your costs will be much more! Also drove a car from Newcastle dock to Scotland with no plates, got stopped once before the Newcastle bridge, copper was a bit stroppy at first but showed him the documentation, explained I was driving the car home and he let me go on my way with a "you'll get stopped for speeding soon enough in that thing".

You can drive the car from the docks to home ( point A to B ) I pick up mine the other week from Southampton, if you got stopped on you way back from Tesco with the shopping in the back then they will do you. On my way back I had police cars going past and they did not even take any notice.

i would be interested to know if this is legal to do this or is it just somthing that is left to the coppers descretion?....does anyone know for sure....

I'll let you all know how it goes next week. But I'm pretty sure it's legal to drive to and from an MOT. So the secret is to have the MOT booked near home, drive there, cancel the booking and drive home....

or sit the MOT, still cheaper than transporting it LOL

i was under the impression that it was illegal to drive the car cause it is not registered in the uk and therefore no insurance company will insure it but i could be wrong thats just what i was told when i looked into importing a car myself:confused:

You have to have insurance first before you can register the car with the DVLA, and the insurance company can use the VIN number.

I've just renewed my insurance anyway and based it on getting the Zed, and the insurance co. were quite happy using the VIN until its registered. So at least I'll be insured :)

we drove ours back from southampton without plates and allthough it attracted a HELL of a lot of attention, we didnt get pulled, we did have trade plates though, not exactly on display very well though.

I doubt you will get pulled, and if you do then just show them the docs to show you got cleared from the docks just a couple of hours ago and you are taking the car home, I can't see them arguing tbh.

drove all the way home with no plates without any problems, just a few comments at the petrol station and from the RAC man...

lots of stares though, took it easy all the way to avoid drawing too much attention to myself - kinda difficult in the Z though :)
