Today dealt with a zed with a very poor tick over and also very reluctant to rev above 2000rpm arrived in the workshop, all usual checks found nothing wrong so on to a compression test.

 

All three of the right hand bank cylinders had a zero reading!

 

After stripping the the front of the cam covers off all was revealed,

the right hand inlet camshaft was some 30 to 40 degrees out!

 

Now I have seen this before when an old belt has lost some teeth or the belt tensioner has failed but there was plenty of evidence that the belt had been changed and the tension was ok? after further checks when removed the belt was NOT a genuine Nissan part, in fact it had no markings at all,the belt looks in very good condition but the teeth shape is unlike the Nissan part and weight of the belt is much less... can only conclude the belt is of inferior quality and the teeth shape allowed the cam to jump, unbelivable concidering 13 teeth are engaged at any time on that cam sprocket?

 

Good news is a new Nissan belt,stat etc and the engine sound sweet again..... lucky, lucky

jeff whats the current waiting time to book my car in, i need cambelt and a rather noisey problem on the right hand bank bottom cam as u look at the engine from the front, the ally jobby in that picture seems to be sounding not right, oh and a power steering leak problem too, if i need to phone about this let me know

Mmm..... Mr.Duff the warning was about the possible consequences of NOT using Nissan parts and was meant to be a shared experience to help others not to make the same mistake !

Jeff,i take it its Lee's zed,does it still need new turbos then,very lucky engine ok,a bit of good news for him at least!,glad we did not drive it all the way to you,would of knackerd it more!:eek:

Tony, the turbo is ok for the time been, at least not driving it saved the engine been damaged.....good call.

When i replaced my cambelt i used what looks like the same belt, it's obiously for a Z but no a genuine Nissan 1, better get it looked at..

Andy: I think it means dont use ANYTHING else than Nissan unless its race spec (spec'ed up) etc......

 

I learnt the hard way on a patterned head gasket for my old S2 RS Turbo, boy did I learn.........:o

Just to answer, yes, that was my car... Jeff's saved me from many £££££ bill, and has done an absolutely cracking job so far... left the car with him to sort out some more minor bits before collecting saturday... anybody else up or around on saturday?

I will be up sat dinner time to collect mine and like you say Nix, Jeff is a top bloke, always prepared to help you out under any circumstances.

 

He spent a good 45mins on the phone to me yesterday as I couldnt get my car started from cold, the revs would go up but then the car would just die!!! Finally got it started and took it up to Jeff as he's chipping the ECU for me on saturday anyway so I thought I might as well take it up early.

Well I join the M40 at banbury, its only 10 mins from me and then get on the M42, I think its the straightest way. MK is only 25mins from Brackley so I am sure you can get on the M40 in just over 30mins on a good day.;) Mind you, you dont have your 300zx so it might take longer!:D

I've got no problem finding tamworth! Girlfriend lives in Burntwood.. for me it's straight up the A5, trouble is because the Z's up there I need a lift to get it! Could take me a very very long time without the zed given I'd be walking!

Tell you what mate, chuck us a fiver and I'll come and get you if you like, it'll be about 12ish....if thats alright. Its the missus car so I have to cover fuel.......
