Seems like ages since i was last on here...:eek:

Hope all is well!!

Guys i need help and some info on turbos, recently my engine just collapsed on me so ive decided to get it rebuilt:rolleyes: So whilst the eng's out, might as well do the usual and get me T's upgraded.....not that ive got spare cash lying around or anything:D :D Which is y i need to know which 1's are the best to get power wise etc. I need them to handle over 400bhp easy cos im also getting forged pistons, bearings, uprated gaskets etc etc....

 

all info much appreciated!

Well the thing is ive got around a grand for turbos and im aware that u cant get much for that. But ive seen smithy and SE selling hybrid ones and uprated t's for around 800....apparantly they can handle 400+bhp??

 

whats the diff between them & hks etc.... appart from$$$

Jaz, the turbo's i do for your power output are £500 each, difference between these and most other hybrids is they come with race spec stagger gap rear seals as standard, simply cos it's the rear seal that goes first in turbo's especially when de-catted, so why spend all that dosh and risk repairing them before you have too ;) if you want in excess of 500 bhp then it's the roller bearing jobbies at £875 each, bloody big and spool up very quick, same spec as the large HKS jobbies, but less lag and less money :D as with most Jap made stuff yer paying for the name.

Smithy just out of interest who makes the Ball bearing turbos and which model are they?

 

Just for your information you don't need forged pistons for 400BHP and some people are of the opinion that you do not need them until 600ish BHP!

 

Also metal head gaskets are only meant to last as long as stock ones!

 

 

My choice of turbos would be

 

Smithys, great value for a grand

Garrett BB GT25's, Great performance but aggro to fit

PE1420's! Slightly more expensive than the Garret but bolt straight on apparently, talk to Duffman!

bout the pistons, my engine was rebuilt at the end of 1999, piston no 6 went bang last months(running at 350bhp).....so i think its safe to say you DO need forged pistons b4 600bhp.

 

I also said 'over 400bhp', 'over' indicating more than 400bhp.....

 

Neither was i indicating that new gaskets were to handle extra power, they just need to be replaced because thats what u do when u rebuild an engine, you DONT use the old 1's;)

 

anyway i shall speak to duffy!

Hello Mate,

 

You did say you were getting uprated gaskets, so I presumed they were metal ones!

 

The reason why Number 6 cylinder goes bang is due to a fault in the block manufacturing process, the old flashings from the casting virtually cover the the coolant flow to no 6 cylinder.

So when you get your engine rebuilt, get them to take out the core plugs and file away the casting flashings!

350 BHP is well within the capabilites of a Z engine running correctly!

Jaz... same position as you now! My zed went up to zedworld for some checking out after what seemed an electrical problem.. turns out I've got one possible two shagged turbo's, plus quite nasty engine problems.. so same thing.. what shall I do whilst the engine's out.

 

Thinking about going the whole hog for a nice meaty set of upgrades to both engine and turbo's, keeping cost low, I'm not prepared to walk away from my zed!!! I love it!

 

Have you decided what to go with yet?

PE1420s - bolt straight on, comes as a kit even with shiney new quarter pipes! They are bigger than stock tubs so you do need to bend the odd oil line slightly etc to get round the actuators. After the first few miles of driving my car with these on, a filter and exhaust but otherwise stock (why go the whole hog straight away? lol) all I can say is that they are INCREDIBLE!!! Expensive but unbelievable spool up :D Nearly ran into the back of cars when I've been overtaking them cos the car took off so fast!!! I love these turbos! :D

 

However they aren't the only ones you can get and I'm sure there are other good ones out there. However the 1420s are about the newest design of them all so in theory should be best - who knows???

mate i havent decided yet! i need to keep within my budget otherwise no money 4 the rebuild...:(

 

Andy, they sound great! how do they shape up compared to T28, the 1's in 200sx? also mate how much would i be looking for PE1420s?
