A new noise has just appeared on the black beast.

If the clutch is engaged in first, second, or neutral there is a whining noise (bearing) but either it's not there or I can't hear it in third, fourth, or fifth.

Could this be the clutch release bearing?

Also it sounds like it's winding down when you come to a standstill when the clutch pedal is depressed.

Any ideas?

it does sound like the release bearing. does it do it when stationary & depressing the clutch??

ahhh, poss spigot bearing or more likely the primary (input) shaft bearing in the box.

it goes away when the pedal is depressed then?

Doubt it but it could simply be the shifter bushing. Heard many differing explanations of the sound of this so it could well be worth a try. Bit fiddly but so much cheaper than removing the box ;)
