Got to be vaery careful here, but i only bought my Z from a garage in Liskeard, Cornwall 3 weeks ago, with a brand new MOT and service and the speedo is registering 130mph doing only as a guess 50mph!!!!

Can anyone let me know if selling a car with a speedo not working is illegal and if the car is deemed then unroadworthy?

Would it have failed its MOT?

Am i driving illegally?

The garage concerned said it would fix it but to date has made no effort to get the car back in. Does anyone know what the problem is (may have asked before - sorry) and where i can get the part from so i can tell this garage where to get it before i go to my solicitor and sue them.

This garage sells porsches, astons and brand new cars and their customer service (in my opinion) is rubbish. I was called a liar on the phone yesterday and told it was not a major problem!! I will happily give the name of the garage (off the A38, near Liskeard) so in my opinion never buy a car from there. Well ****** off.

My Z is a 1989/90 300ZX TT Jap spec. Thanks.

I'd think not having a working speedo is illegal, but I'm not sure...

What I would say (and bear in mind I know nothing, but since there are no replies yet, I might as well have a shot) is that the dodgy speedo could be down to a bad kph/mph conversion or dodgy clocks, *or* it could be the speed sensor. Personally, I've got a intermittantly dodgy speed sensor, and it's either working fine, or completely off the scale... plus, sometimes the power steering goes heavy when it's acting up (since the PAS is variable with speed). If none of that sounds familiar (and if the ratio of displayed to actual speed is fairly constant), I'd guess (and remember I know nothing) the problem would be in your clocks (or the box of gubbins behind them).

It shouldn't be a serious problem, but it needs sorting. Hopefully now, someone with some knowledge can come in and blow me out of the water ;) Well, at least maybe I've given you some ideas :D

Everything sold has to be "fit for the purpose" etc. a speedo this bad is not fit for the purpose. Period. And if they ask why, how do you know what speed you are doing? If you get done for speeding are they responsible?

It is not tested on the MOT.

If you get done speeding you have no excuse.

You could rely on a rev counter to a certain extent - if you know your mph/rpm on a manual. An auto is a bit different due to the converter slip but you still can tell pretty much from it how quick your going if you are familiar with the car.
