I have a 90 zxtt 2+2...I was driving down the M5 last week at approximatley between 120 and 140mph for an hour or so during the early morning, when all of a sudden the car seemed to jump out of gear and the rev counter shot right up while using o/d. i slowed down to 90mph turned the o/d off it was fine while in 3rd gear until i put the o/d on again and i reached over 120 then it slipped out of gear again....i got it home..the next morning i checked the autotrans fluid level which was ok,then took it out for a test drive to see if the box had just a temparary fault but had even worse problems...it wouldnt change from 1st to second or to 3rd gear unless i took my foot off the gas then it changed from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd....if i put it in hold it seems to change fine..but not in normal or power setting....can any one help!!!

Try disconnecting the battery for an hour and see if that clears any electronic fault - the box can get in a flap and do some odd things sometimes.

But...

It sounds like the problems I had with mine when the clutch packs failed. Time for an expensive rebuild. :(

:D :D only 120mph to 140mph:D :D !!!!!!!!

i hope its not the clutch packs as the zx has only 42,000 kilometer's on the clock

hmmm its uncanny how many of these 13 year old cars have 42000km on the clock lol, its probably been clocked or set back, no gearbox woudl pack up in that time unless it had he shit driven out of it at every oppertunity.

i would apprieciate any help on what the problem could be or if any one else has had the same fault's with their auto..but i do not apprieciate sarcastic remark's please.....if you want to help then help...!

im not beign scarcastic, thats probably the cause of your problem no offense intended ect, but its just a case of logic, cars this old dont all have such little milage. And if it was driven hard the box can suffer.

what is strange is the o/d doe's not slip at all in hold?

checked trany oil and its slightly darker but no debris or metalic particles

sounds to me like the ECU is acting up, reset it yet?

Sounds like a problem i had with mine.By any chance have you had the speedo converted yet to MPH????

Marc:)

FWIW my one packed up at approx 30,000 miles, although the symptoms weren't quite the same as yours.

i dunno wot you lot are worrying about mine only runs when it has a very worrying rattle coming from the box which in itself isnt so bad but when the rattling stops so does the car

I'd defo disconect the battery for a bit and see if that sorts it. If you are getting all the gears it may be electrical and not mechanical, when my box went on my old one i lost all drive, but i suppose there are many diffent ways the autobox can die.

Good Luck

Mine would only change up if u took the power off for a second........then I completely lost reverse..............and had major grinding noise......which was nice.....

Answer-----re-con box.....+ oil cooler.....expensive!!!!

Tooley..............you seeling your car??????

hi mate,

have u done a diagnostic?

it sounds familiar, im wondering if it could be ur TPS(throttle position sensor)....could out or faulty.

if not see what code errors the diag comes up with;)

jaz

yep im selling mine when ive fixed the gearbox.......im yearning to go back to my ford days that way i can fix it myself when/if it breaks

cheer's guy's for your info so far.... i have done a diagnostic and the result was no codes.....? i drove the zx today and like i said it will only change gear if you take your foot right off the gas.....also if your doing say 70 in 3rd it changes to o/d but you dont notice the change and the lock up does not seem to be operating at all.....i konw the o/d is working because if i turn it off the box drops to third you can noticably feel the drop......if you boot it in 2nd,3rd or o/d it slips as the turbos kick in.....but 1st is fine....

Haven't read the whole thread so may be repeating someone else here....

Have you got known good auto fluid in yer box?? I thought mine was good but when the pan came off it was burnt, black and full of bits. One of my solenoids is sticking due probably to debris.

Get a reputable company to do a flush and refill for you. Some places will flush it through under pressure for you so that you replace the stuff in the torque convertor too instead of just what's in the pan.

Cheers!

have replaced trans fluid...was dark and burnt too.....havent flushed system though......found bolt stuck to magnet....came from brake band accumalator, have replaced it with new one.....but still wont change to 2nd just skips it and slips into 3rd?from 1st.......how did you rectify a sticking soleniod?.......could this be my problem.....some one suggested it was the brake band? does this affect 2nd gear?....diagnostic came back ok....and i even disconected battery overnight...?

Think you'd have to replace solenoids rather than repair. I had some but sent 'em back 'cos my box was past it according to the autobox place.

There's some electrical resistance checks you can do, have a look at the Auto section of the online manual.

Have you checked you sensor voltages?? TPS, RPM sensor etc?

Cheers!

do you have to drop the cover again to do the resistance check's?

or is there some where external that you can check them...like the loom going to the box....also the day i lost o/d or more like it started to slip at high boost in the same day......second gear was fine until i left the car over night to cool down...then it was the following day i had lost second...gear..

i used to be a mechanic....but i have never worked on automatic gear boxes other than doing a transmission fluid change during services on various car's as we did not specialise in auto repairs ...can you suggest any good transmission overhaulers that charge a reasonable price......
