I think the mechanical side of it has gone t1ts up, as it makes slightly different noises when it tries to fire up!!

Have tried taking it out/reconnecting it, but all to no avail!

Can anyone sort us out with a bargain Comptuer or a cheapish hard drive!!!AS I sit in an internet Cafe, thinking this place is filled with crumpet, why do I want a computer at home!!

Is there anyway of salvaging the information on my old hard drive?

Mark

Hi Mark

try giving the drive a sharp tap on the side when you boot up.

It may be the spindle is stuck.

This is sometimes a cure for hard drives on computers that are usually left on all the time, then wont boot when switched off.

If it is total mechanical failure i'm not sure there is anyway of recovering the data, maybe a specialist company could do it.

Hope this helps.

When you get a new drive ,Load an OS then try fitting the dead drive as a slave .

If its on its last legs it may not want to boot the OS ... but they will generally be discovered by windows and allow you to copy the data to the new drive

Hi,

I once had a hard drive that would only work upsidedown! giuve it a try, the chances of this fixing it are small but worth a try as it fixed mine for just long enough to recover the data.

Better your hard disk than your Zed:)

Cheers Guys!!

I have managed to get back on after giving the hard drive an even bigger clout on it's sides, it has fired up but is still making strange noises!

I have managed to get Dell to send me another 4.3GB hard drive, even though I was 6 days out of warranty!

The guy delivers it and says he wants the old one in exchange, I say I can't as it still has info I want to transfer and its still in the computer!

Anyway Dell ring up saying they will give me 30 days to return it!

I ask why as it is a Hard drive that is worth no more than £20 new, and it would cost more to courier it than it is worth to them!

They say according to them it is worth $600!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And they want it back as it is part of the terms and conditions I signed up for!!!

I think they forgot my warranty expired 6 days ago and the courier never even asked for my signature for the hard drive!!!!!

Before u return it to them make sure you delete the partitions, format it and leave it next to a strong magnet just in case !

Don't want them snooping on you're hard drive
