That was probably detonation followed by blowing turbo seals - start saving !!!

F***!

but Andy, pulling away from lights, no smoke? or would it only happen at higher speeds?

No it takes time for the oil to seep in from the turbos. You would have burned that lot off. It will probably do it again in the morning.

Stuart

:(

guys what can i do? do i have to replace the turbos cant the they just be tightened or somin?(sounds stupid, i know)

if so whats the cheapest place and what would i roughly be looking at?

cheers

stuart

If I've been dawdling for a while in traffic etc then mine smokes if you boot it. Definitely getting a little worse too - that's why I bought new turbos a few weeks back. They'll get fitted when it gets critical.

Andy, those the ones u got off steve?

Also mate, wanted to ask if turbos can be changed from underneath on an auto, cos i know u can on man's..??

jaz

Yup, they would be. And I don't think the auto/man would make any difference. However, it's normal to remove the engine to get to them, but there are a couple of places who will risk the engine in place approach. (Hassle is that you can't get to the gasket surfaces etc easily)

Alright guys,

Been up to nottingham at the weekend, had a stainless system, and blitz induction fitted by Luke at the Z centre, nice stuff, works well, but have just noticed that the driver side exhaust is smoking at idle and the passengers is not, and there is blue-ish smoke when throttled, the car only has 40,000 miles on it, if that, i thought the turbo's seals would be fine with backpressure increase??? at this sort of mileage, and i thought the turbo's wear was pretty balanced, i gather this is gonna get costly??

who is best to talk to bout solving it??

Please help (i hate blue smoke-not good)

Cheers

Paul:confused:

A BLITZ Exhaust woudl give oyu a backpressure decrease, not increase.

40 000 miles what year model is it?

it does sound like a turbo that. (could be from various reasons)

ie car being driven very hard ect, not left to cool down properly, to much boost will do a set of turbos in, in no time.

Alright 300z

Its a 91 jap import, running stock until these mods, the exhaust is a custom front section, then a mongose cat back section, with the cats gone.

The car is always cooled down properly via the turbo timer, and i never boost it until it has reached operating temp, which is why im a bit pissed.

thing is i give it some but not that often,???

How much do the old turbo replacements go for these days, and how long can i get away with it like it is?? the smoke is not really that bad, but more annoying than anything??

Cheers mate.

alright again,

Just left the car for over half an hour now, then started her up again

No smoke at all, revved a couple of times, and nothing???

I thought some of the oil would have seeped through the seal in the turbo and then smoked on start up? am i wrong, should i check it in the morning when it has cooled down??

Cheers mate

it oculd have been a bit of surge or something.

assuming the milage is true, i doubt youll have a problem with those turbos...

regarding decatting, there is still enough backpressure in the system for that to not be a problem, as many people have had smoking turbos from decatting, so have you got as many people without this problem.

it could be the o2 sensor, mine does a similar thing and I think my o2 sensor is on the way out, my turbos are on about 40k now as well i believe.

PCV Valves?

Just a thought as mine doesn't smoke except under two circumstances: 1) Car has been standing idling for in excess of 10mins or 2) Been driving 'off boost' for a while then floor it to WOT.

I have put 1 down to PCV valves and 2 to hardening turbo seals.
