any more info?

when it dies does it just cut out or run rough? have you done an ECU diag yet?

was the PTU the new modified type??

paul,

The PTU is the upgrade from nissan USA and the ECU reads code 55. The car will run for about 10 minutes then just die, much similar to when it runs out of fuel.It will start again and again and run for a few seconds untill it's reaches maximum temp and then no more untill it cools.Had a go with the easy stuff this afternoon,will try Tim's idea tomorrow, need to get the seats out did'nt fancy it today.

Tim can you find any more info on the wires running in and out of the fuel pump controller so i know what i'm doing.

300zx TT 1993 K plate UK 100200miles and missing it badly.Mrs wants to go out in it tomorrow missing it also

Ken,

I'll grab a beer and the workshp manual this evening and see if I can jog my memory as to which wires you need, I'll post again tomorrow AM.

Really does sound like FPCU to me, if it is you're going to need a replacement or a doner unit to 'knick' a transistor from so you can ment yours. I think I paid about £50 from AndyZ for one of mine, but don't quote me on that.

Tim

Okay, just had a look at the manual and you can either check the voltages across the Orange and White wires at the FPCU or..

This is an easier solution:

Check the voltages at the Fuel Pump itself.

Lift the boot carpet and spare, under there is an access hole to the Fuel pump.

Going into the fuel pump are 4 wires + an earth to the pump itself:

Black = earth

White with Purple tracer = Pump +

Blue with Red tracer = Pump –

Yellow = Pump sender

Yellow with Blue Tracer = Pump sender

Put a meter across the White/Purple and Blue/Red, and you need to run the car so make sure they are long wires, unless you have an accomodating other half who will sit in the back while you drive around. Voltages should be within the tolerances I said in the other thread. i.e: 'Voltage should be: Battery voltage for 30sec after starting, dropping to 3 - 6v on idle and back up to battery voltage on WOT. (EF & EC - 153).'

Good luck, let me know how you get on.

Tim

Tim,

Got to pump controller in the boot and run the test over the two wires you mentioned, it read 5.91v when on idle and jumped to 6.80v when the car was reved. The car ran for nealy 45 minutes and nothing heppend.Pulled the temp sensor off while the car idled and the second fan came in, this obviously means the the temp sensor is ok.What do you mean by WOT (EF & EC - 153) ?. Do these thing play up or just go? it looks like i'll be driving around with a boot full of tools again !!!!!!!!!!!:(

WOT = wide open throttle

Ken,

I just spent ages writing a reply and I had a system crash so I lost the lot! :@

Did you take the car out for a run whilst checking the voltages or just run it on the driveway?

When I had this problem I hooked up my meter and then went out shopping to replicate the conditions under which the car behaved like a 'pig'. This seems to be the problem with this failure, it doesn't happen all the time. So, you really need a meter hooked up to show the drop in voltage and it is a significant one when it happens.

If it all comes up clear when the car refuses to start them I'm at a loss, but I think we're on the right course.

Ah, your other Q's:

WOT = Wide open throttle

EF & EC - 153 = The relavent section in the Service manual

As for this happening gradually, well I'm no electronics expert but there are some large heat sink fins on the FRCU so the Transistors must create a significant amount of heat. It is my belief that over time these components 'cook' themselves leading to failure. Here ate two pics of one of the failed units that I have.

Thanks for the info & tips i will rig up the meter next weekend in the morning and drive round to monitor the readings, not going out till then just in case i break down,i will get back to you soon & tell you how i got on.
