January 31, 200322 yr Dave, do you live in a rough area or what? How often do you need to physically defend yourself? Martial arts may be good in a one-on-one or a two-on-one situation, but unless you are very very very experienced you will get a pasting while you try to think about and then get your 'attack' move together. Much better going to the track and practice your RUNNING skills than going toe to toe. Not heroic I know, but then you can always go back later and get them one-on-one with a baseball bat!:D

The other reasons mentioned above are far greater. I don't actually like fighting, but I like taking sh** of nobheads even less ;) I'm not saying I thump everyone who does me a bad turn, but being able to assert oneself knowing you can back it up physically if necessary is NICE ;) Violence is a last resort when other avenues are not open to you.
