How Do .......

The back of the car seems to hop or stp out whenever i hit a pothole, is it just the fat tyres that cause this, i am goin to check the rear for any suspesion probs tomorrow... is there any area that i should be paying particular attention 2 ?

i am going to get 4 wheel lighnment done, but i dont c the point in doin this unless all suspension components are sorted.

i phone up my local nissan garage=, about getting aligned, they said that they do not do it in theor workshop but that the tyre department could, they would use consult to lock the HICAS before taking it over to them.

i then asked about checking the diagnostics with consult they said £31+vat ..... just to make sure all systems are AOK !!!!

I also asked at a body shop about getting alignened, they said £80 + any extra time, apparently their system takes about 2 hours to set up and check that everything is ok? is this more than i need or r they just takin the piss outa me ?

any ideas on what should be don ?

Hi Scott,

I'm not an expert, but is your car fitted with HICAS - the 4 wheel steering system? Have you had checked, for any play in the rear steering arms?

You may like to browse the Interactive Manual under the FAQ link (top of screen) - around page RA-32/33, etc.... (Rear Axle & Suspension). It is quite normal for the ball joints to have warn with age/milage and need replacing. They do greatly affect the handling and feel from the back of the car.

Good luck, Geoff

Jack the back of the car up and check the play of the back wheels from top to bottom. If it's a fair bit then there is your answer. You need to get your camber sorted mate. 4 wheel alignment from a speacialist.

Check the rear shox first ;) Sounds very familiar ;)

CheerZ,

Andy

I think Andy is right.

looking at the service manual, it seems that the whole rear suspension is supported by the dampers. That`s a hell of a lot of strain.

Yeah, go for dampers first...

Steve

I agree with the Duffster too. My car was exactly the same when i got it had new rear dampers and rebound bushes(i think) and the back end was tight as a yorkshiremans wallet.:D

Are you running stock Nelson shocks?

If so try pulling the handbrake up one click so that the light comes on on the dash. This stiffens up the rear suspension.

Rear shocks have actuators which for the US market enabled a soft/hard suspension setting, I think the US Z's were fortunate enough to get the button aswell...we didn't...why??? My Mk III Supra had the same but without the button on the centre console to change the settings. On the Soup it was called TEMS, Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension.

My car did the same, it was a scary nightmare to drive, Bob Ford at Arriva Nelson in Peterborough demonstrated this to me and it turned out to be the rear shocks being KO'd.

;)

When I went the last meeting and I saw following Scoops. His Z was bouncing all over the motor way. It would go over a bump and then bounce up and down a few times before settling.

Sorry Scoops just saying what I saw. No offece to you lovley car. :D

Would duff shocks produce a sideways kinda hop though? mine was doing same and is steering wotsit, jacking up the rear and checking the play revealed this quite clearly!! Well, Jeff @ Zedworld spotted it as he fitted my new shocks and springs. The vibaration (aswell as the hopping) was very similar to propshaft bearing, but on checking, prop was solid.

This is deffo shocks - common symptom.

My Hicas arms got some play in them and it did affect handling but it didnt jump out - it sort of rolled around a bit - a little disconserting but it didnt jump or hop out on me once.

Just thought I'd say again, had brand new shocks and springs fitted on rear and car still hopped and skipped like a good 'un.

MINE was rear steering joint thingy!

Mine does this also. Quite scary at times. Having new rear shocks fitted on the 18th, see if that fixes it.

Dazuti.....if your car still has the original shocks then it is a good idea to replace them but if you are doing it purely to solve the "hopping/skipping" thing, jack your car up man, with your wheel still on and check for play, at least you can get this done at the same time! .........come on, don't be lazy! :D (no offence meant -just want you to get it sorted 1st time!)

Thanks, I'll try that this weekend.

It's still on the original shocks. Just got to 55k miles.

Anyone changed the rear shocks themselves ?.

I was thinking of doing myself but don't fancy standning on the rear disks to force the shock off it's seat.

i was going to do it today, but it's cold brrrrrrrr.......... so i will think about doing it tomorrow !!!!!!

if it tis shocks, what would you's recommend, i aint worried about soft flooty crappy things !...... the harder the better (as they say in some circles)...

need to replace all 4 then ?..... cos of mis matched shocks, if not nissan shocks then just loose the semi-active control on the suspension ?

i assume i would need a motgage for nissan items ??????

thanks Lads

Scottieeeeeeee.....

Nissan rear shocks are only about £40 each so it's the cheaper option in this case. It's rare I know ;).

found problem !!!!!!!!

inner track rod ends ..... phoned Z centre..... he told me what to check. Spot on.

he also has shocks for £30 +VAT .... but now i dont need them HA HA HA

SH*T ball joints are more expensive ... Boll***S

ah welll super car owner ship means supercar expensies

Thanks for all you r help

Scottieee.... :)

UK rear shocks are more like £130 each from Nissan. They have the hard and harder adjustment gizmo that the actuator turns to harden up the rear.

Twas one duff rear on mine that gave the sideways kick sensation over potholes etc. Obviosuly rear rack ball point wear can also affect it.

Not too hard a job to do yourself but you do need decent spring compressors.

Eh??? 130 squids each my ar5e mate! LOL :D

I paid 50 squids each for mine from Nelson in Peterborough on a UK spec car. You've been robbed my friend!
