Did your insurance companies use it as an excuse to hike your insurance up, or were they ok about it ?

they took it as a mod with me with the outlook that you will drive faster - what do you expect from insurance companies?

That's sort of what I figured !

How much did they jack it up by ?

Also, does it cut much off your 0-60 ?

Tesco didnt up my insurance when I told them, and my girlfriend's, who's with direct line, didnt go up when she told them about her traction control on her MINI.

Im not too sure about who I am with, A-Plan. I cant remember if I told them about it or not.

Most places when I was getting quotes didnt add anything on, because most class it as a safty device, but some say you can go faster round corners, which is untrue.

Insurance Factory so far have not wanted any extra money for intake , exhaust or traction control

Nice one - good tip !

I've spoken to Torqueic (where they're getting the group buy) and they're offering the system including lauch control for £620, with £150 for fitting. £100 saving on the Racelogic price ! :D

Cheers !

I'm sure that someone on this forum would be able to fit it a lot cheaper, only a 2-3hr job.

  • Author

Cunning plan ! :)

I'd have to check that Torqueic would sell it on a supply only basis but that could also maybe save me a long journey !

Anybody done them before ?

You mention 0 - 60 times. If your traction control is configured correctly your 0 - 60 times will decrease (i.e you will get to 60 quicker) as it will reduce the slip of the rear wheels. Also save yourself £150 and fit it yourself. There are instructions on my site and also a link to the TT.net page which has more detailed instructions if you get stuck. There are a few people on here who have fitted at least one traction control device. If you get stuck just give us a shout.

Also insurance wise, my insurance allows me to drive any car (Fully comp) as I am insured rather than the car. When it comes to mods, all I need to do is keep the receipts so I can claim for the cost of them if my car gets stolen / set on fire / written off.

I have trouble fitting the petrol myself :D :D :D but if it's that straightforward I might look at getting it done locally and save time and money then !

Cheers for the advice people !

Well I disagree Stuart.

If you get a perfect pull off, ie. using 99%/100% of the traction, you will get a faster pull off from when use your traction control.

Traction control misfires when it detects a wheel spin. The wheel spin means you are losing traction and acceleration. The misfire again means you are losing more acceleration, because it slows you down for a small fraction of a second to gain traction. All this is lost acceleration.

So compairing a perfect launch to one where the TC is used, a perfrect launch is better.

However. How many people can do a perfect launch all the time? None of us. Plus without traction control you will always think, could I have pulled off harder. If you do, it will cause you to wheel spin. This is where the TC is better because it can detect a wheelspin and do somthing about it before you even know its spinning.

On that Vid with my TC launch, you cant see it on the small version but on the uncompressed file my drive back you can see the skid mark I left. It has about 10 small gaps in it. This is where the TC misfired to gain traction. Unfortunaltly as soon as it gained traction, it lost it again. This was due to the left side being on gravel. Hence the skid, grip, skid, grip, skid, grip etc.

Its quite interesting.

Im rambling now so I will stop.

Stuart

Hmmmmmm - thing is, if you don't have TC and it slips, you have to back off, which caused the turbos to unspool. If you have TC, when it backs off for you, the throttle flaps stay open, meaning the turbos stay spooled... Perfect launch? I bet no one has done one yet......

a little hijacking here :D

smw1, who are you insured with then? (can you tell its coming to that time of year?)

will definately be considering TC for mine, just for piece of mind, and at least you can switch it off easily if you feel like having fun

Believe me you can have more fun with it turned on ;) Completely transforms the car, first day I had it fitted me & a mate spent 2hrs just racing round empty roads laughing like loons.

Best money I've ever spent :D:D:D

Jay

I agree you can have more fun with it on.

Before I had it launches almost ended up in a wheelspin when I get to about 5500rpm in first and sometimes in 2nd depending on tyre temperature, how wet it was and road surface.

But now I get a few pops which sound great and keeps me moving. :D

Going round corners is great. On 0% slip it cuts in before you know it. On 5% the back end comes out very slighly before it kicks in and on 10% or 15% you get a nice slide which can be held by just keeping your foot to the floor :D

I have actually found that the car in the dry grips a hell of a lot more than you think. Some times on big empty corners I try to slide it with the TC but I end up flying round it and not need the TC..

.

Im not convinced of this iether. It is a fantastic system, but i doubt it makes you faster in ideal situations.

In most situations it is far faster when trying to go 0-60 ect, but no in perfect dry.

ie go to Santa pod and run it withouth and with (like DUFFER did that day) he was slower if i remember ?

and trap speeds were lower aswell with TC on?

Hi James, I'm insured with USAA which is the US military's insurance company. Unfortunately you can not get insured with them unless you or a family member work for the US Military (and my missus does) :D.

As for the 0 - 60, the reason I say this is due to the fact that I got TC fitted about 2 weeks after I got the car, so I guess I'm not used to standard starts :(. Not risking turning it off though (well not totally) It's far too much fun !!!. People who haven't got traction control fitted to their Z, probably think he's not going to make it when sitting in the passenger seat approaching a corner.

Just remember (especially in this weather) that TC can't rewrite the laws of physics, just give you a helping hand.. If you go in too fast you'll just understeer into a hedge/kerb/pedestrian/parked car/solid object..

And with it set on the higher slip percentages you can still end up doing nice pirouettes if you're unlucky..

While on the subject of traction control.

I use the windows GUI software to configure rather than the dos version that comes with the unit.

Can I ask what you all use and where you get your settings from, do you just use the trial and error method or is there a site somewhere which gives you a basic setting and then you just alter slightly taking your tyres, wheel size, rear shocks ;) into consideration. The reason I am asking is I am currently to my knowledge running the same settings as SRRAE, but have far most skip than him when pulling away (judging by his vid). This may be due to the rear shocks as I think we both have Falken tyres on if I remember correctly.

Its easy to do good ones in an auto! Nobody touches you! Instant grip and acceleration into the distance!

Sits back with smug grin!
