I've been told that the wiring in 300s is not what it should be. Now given the fact that these cars have lots of wiring, could it be that this is the single greatest cause of problems in these cars....

I think age and underbonnet heat are the two causes of most failures - barring catastrophic mechanical failures like turbo's, oil starvation, the Warren factor (only kidding m8!)

 

Lets face it - 12 years of searing underbonnet temperatures, and rapid heat cycles, is going to turn plastics brittle, make copper corrode nicely (when you add that heat to some moisture), and is going to turn everything rubber to brittle, cracked stuff..

 

And lets not forget, the majority of the Z's in this country are early 90's, there are very few 95> cars over here - perhaps the story would be different if that were to change, and 1999 cars etc started coming in.. We'd probably think they were fantastically reliable..

I think most cars have 3 or 4 major earthing points, and if 1 of these isnt 100% it can cause all sorts of problems that you couldnt think og. Bad performance, bad MPG anythink. It all has a knock on effect.

 

Some one I know of, stripped his car out, every thing interior, engine for some reason, cant remember what, and when they put everythiung back in they made sure all the earths where good, clearing any sulphur, rust dirt from these points.

After that the car ran much better. Apparently it felt more powerful, more resonsive and did better MPG.
