Hi all. Im currently trying to mount a factory steering wheel to my car in my newly started long journey of restoring it back to former glory.

 

Ive bought a wheel in beautiful condition to replace a quick release alcantara type setup. Im really not a fan of this due to how intrusive it is, the wheel has a deep dish and coupled with the mounting boss it protrudes too far in for the driving position.

 

So I have the wheel, the horn with cruise buttons, 17mm nut... but I believe Im missing a slip ring.

My car is a 1992 (non airbag) non-turbo model with cruise.

Im finding myself at a loss trying to A. Identify which part I need, and then B. Source one.

I put the word out on a zx marketplace on Facebook for the part I need, to which some chap cast doubt on the whole thing as he says the NA doesnt have a slip ring at all.

I cant find any pictures or adverts for a pre-airbag slip ring for non hicas cars. Can someone please shed some light on this?

Surely there must be something between the back of the wheel and column casing to accomodate the horn/cruise/steering angle sensor?

Please see pics for reference of my current setup with the dust cover removed, and the back of the wheel Ive just bought.

No steering angle sensor on a non HICAS (ie not a TT) model. 

The clock spring (slip ring) I would guess only serves the cruise control module as that's the only electrics on the steering wheel that need to pass through. I assume you car has cruise from factory? If not, then you don't need a clock spring. 

 

In your images it looks like that huge metal chunk at the front is all aftermarket and can be removed revealing the threaded end of the steering shaft that you bolt your oem wheel too. 

 

Unbolt the 6 allen key fixings around the boss (I've arrowed one of them in red) and remove boss. Looking down inside the cast aluminium adapter

you should then be able to see the original steering wheel nut at the bottom of the adapter (location arrowed in green). Unscrew the nut and remove

the adapter. You should then be able to see if the original slip ring is still there.

Thanks Andrew. If theres time tomorrow evening Im going to get it in the workshop and strip it down, Ill follow up with what I find.

Although when prizing the (already loose) column casing it appears as though its missing. Curious to inspect in there though.

Hi Lexx. Yes it does have cruise.
Theyre proving extremely difficult to source for an NA... with cruise... pre-airbag.
Technically could I fit the wheel with the absence of a clock spring then?
A horn has been retro-bodged into the dash fascia via a big red button.
This could remain in place until such time a clock spring comes available and I could in the meantime use the factory wheel (without cruise function/horn) I assume?

If the wheel will fully slip into the splines and the nut go on fully, then the steering will work. So all is good. 

Not sure legally where things stand if horn button isn't on steering wheel but if it's passed MOTs in the past then I guess it's a non issue. 

I will add the disclaimer to this that I've never tried to fit a z32 steering wheel without a clock spring so I may be talking utter balls.
