Hi I don't want to be the bearer of bad tidings but have same issue and have just stripped engine down to replace lifters and found 1 valve retainer had snapped so nothing was holding the valve in place so don't know what damage has been done and that only sounded like a sticking lifter. I hope yours is just the lifter

Best of luck  Richard

Hi I had lifter tick, rebuilt all the lifters and when I started the car the first few times it was perfect, now I have a bit of lifter tick back so think a couple need changing, very long tedious job depends how confident you feel, you can try a few oil changes.

Wrong grade of Oil and Castrol is not what it was it seems.I know of several owners of performance cars who have gone away from it over noises from lifters..It should be a 10/40 grade in the 300zx

Hi Jimmer,

I'm the guy who bought Ollie Bells blue TT. He told me you recommended 10w-40 only actually so that's what I went with on my recent and first service, but what brand oil would you recommend? I've usually gone with Millers Oils Nanodrive but on modern diesel cars, as I found Castrol made the engine quite noisy funnily enough. I wasn't sure on the brand for the 300zx and after some googling, went with Castrol in the end.

Need to keep it running for at least 20 minutes to get the oil back into the lifters.  If it has sat for months unused they can drain right down. Miine does this.  Sorned a few years now but starts Instantly even after a few months sitting.

If it’s been sat around doing nothing for a long time then it probably wants a drive. By all means get a good quality oil change in there but if it’s been idle for a prolonged period it’s going to do it. It’s an old car.

I put Millers Nanodrive CFS 5w40 NT+, car has never run so well... This is what Opie suggested, and was really pleased with the results
