Z recently went into *****wood Nissan Tunbridge Wells (who I have been using for years) for manual gearbox oilchange.

Next day from cold:

difficult gear selection, horrible dry bearing noise, bearing rattle from box.

After much deliberation (they almost changed the clutch)they put "a lighter oil "in, cured first two problems instantly , still rattles on cold start which wasn't there when it went in ... "oil was within Nissan parameters sir"......

What should the oil grade have been before I take legal advice???

According to the Nissan manual 75-90.

What did they put in?

you dont need to threaten anything yet. i had nissan make a complete mess of changing my cam belt and both hed gaskets blew, cos the YTS nipper didnt bleed the system...at least thats what i think ;)

what you should do is take notes of everything that has happended, who you have spoken to and when. then if it turns out that they have put the wrong oil in, then you write to them (politely) and state their error, quoting where the correct info is) and request that they repair the damge free of charge. you then go from there. i have pasted my letter to nissan when things went wrong, note that i had them for lying to me as well, which they may have done to you, but you wont know this until you have checked your facts. after this letter i had all the work done at another garage, which cost nissan uk nearly 3k! and i incurred no costs at all, i even had a courtesy car while the 300 was at the other garage, supplied by nissan.

hope this helps.

the letter.....

Dear .....

I am in the unfortunate position where I have to bring to your attention a series of incompetent repairs and being told untruths which I have had to withstand following what should have been a minor service and cam belt change on my Nissan 300ZX (Reg number) by Nissan X.

On Friday 3rd May 2002 Nissan X changed the cam belt and performed a minor service on my Nissan 300ZX, for which I paid £350 and collected at the end of that day. On Saturday 4th May 2002 (the next afternoon), I noticed that coolant was leaking from under the car. I called out the RAC and the mechanic informed me that clips were missing from two hoses, and that this was causing the leak. The RAC mechanic replaced the missing clips, which incidentally took most of that Saturday afternoon.

I phoned Nissan X on Tuesday 7th May (after the bank holiday Monday) and told them what had happened. They subsequently told me to bring the car to their workshop on Friday 10th May where they will carry out an inspection. I waited 3hr at Nissan X that Friday whilst they worked on the car. On Saturday 11th May (the next afternoon) I noticed the temperature gauge rising, so I stopped the vehicle and got out. I then saw white smoke coming out from one of the exhausts after which I turned the car off. Once again I called out the RAC, who informed me that all the coolant had been lost and that a head gasket had probably blown. A recovery truck took the car back to Nissan X that afternoon. When we arrived at Nissan X the car was put in the workshop and I was kindly given a loan car.

On Monday 13th May 2002 I turned up at Nissan X and spoke to Mr X (Servicing Advisor), who assured me that they would fix the problem. I asked for one of the more experienced technicians to work on the car and not the young lads who had previously done the work on my car, which he agreed with. I rang that afternoon (5:20pm) to ask whether any progress had been made. Mr X, said that their most experienced technician was away at present and was expected back either Wednesday or Thursday of that week. I stated that I was quite happy to wait a few days if it meant an experienced technician would then work on the vehicle.

I phoned on Wednesday 15th May 2002 (5:20pm) and Mr X said the technician was not in and was expected at work the next day, and that he would be put straight on the job. I then phoned on Thursday 16th May 2002 (5:30pm) and Mr X informed me that the technician had started on the vehicle and was in the process of removing one of the cylinder heads. He then said I would be phoned when they have something to report.

On Saturday 18th May 2002, I arrived at Nissan X to collect some compact discs from my car to find that the vehicle had not moved from where it was left on Saturday 11th May, and obviously no work at all had been carried out, after being told quite the contrary two days previously.

After the mistakes already made by Nissan X and being told what were in fact lies, I am not willing to have them do any further work on my car. Therefore, I have spoken to X Engineering in Darlington (a Nissan 300ZX specialist) who are happy to repair my vehicle to its original condition, for which I expect Nissan X to pay, in full, including the transportation costs of the vehicle to X Engineering. There are, of course, all the additional costs I have incurred, such as mobile phone calls, RAC costs and time off work. I hope you will contact me as soon as possible with regards to this situation.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Steven Compton

That rattling noise that you get at low revs, what the hell is it? Is it knackered input shaft bearing or something? Or can it be cured by using a different oil.

It seems to happen at about 1200-1700rpm in any gear & sounds like a horrible grating sound!

Any ideas folkes?
