Question re: SE fast road A/T rebuild and A/T services

Morning!

I've been hearing a lot of speak lately on this forum about soft rebuilds/SE fast-road rebuilds/AT services. I've tried to contact SE but can't get an answer so I'm going to ask the obvious here. What exactly is done to the A/T as SE and what is a soft rebuild? Also, I've spoken to a few Zed owners who had their A/T serviced, i.e., new fluids etc, and they have had horrendous problems a couple of weeks down the line. 9 times out of 10 the cause of the problem was gunk dislodged by the fluid change. I've been contemplating getting my A/T serviced but am a bit hessitant to do so given the potential problems.

Anyway, any insight into the above is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Dan

I've been thinking over the same mate.

I was going to get my fluid changed but after reading quite a few posts here about them going tits up afterwards it put me off.

The box has now died anyway and I am trying to decide whether to go for the SE Fast Road rebuild or convert to a manual.

I'm running over 400bhp and thinking of going for big turbo's and injectors in future to try to get 500 - 600bhp.

I spoke to Peter at SE about the fast road rebuild and without telling me exactly what is done he did say that it increases the power handling substantially and makes the changes quicker and firmer. He said it would handle more than 400bhp nicely but didn't give me a maximum it could take.

I think he said the normal rebuild is about £1200 and the F.R is £1450 plus about £250 labour to remove and re-fit.

A manual conversion with a big clutch will probably be about £2K - £2.5K from what I can work out - manual box £1200?, used accessories £300?, clutch £400?, fitting £400?

I like my auto but if I go for really big power then maybe a manual and hefty clutch is the way to go...?

...thanks for raising the question. I can't help but as an auto box fluid change is on my list once the weather improves, I'd be interested to know from anyone with experience of any tips, tricks type of fluid, dos and don'ts etc. I'm sure there's a few of us out there that would be interested.

thanks in advance

The cheapest and biggest effect to my old 4.7 Porsche 928 auto was to renew the fluid in the box.

There was a huge difference in changing up and down, a lot quicker indeed!

Can't say i would ever get an auto again though found them a bit boring after a while, although my 928 auto is much quicker than my import non turbo manual.......

Oh well better get a TT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Danny do it mate,my fast rebuild has done over 30k and it changes through the gears in a split second:D I LOVE MY SE FAST ROAD REBUILD!

I have also heard great reviews fron SE's fast road upgrade and its probably the way to go.

Caution with auto box oil changes though, particularly on aged boxes. The auto on my Z failed VERY soon after an oil change and I have heard of many similar stories. The chances are that you still have 10+ year old oil in your box. Unless it has been changed religously every 2 years (max) then you may find that a fresh change will be too much for for box (too slippy) and may cause the "gear bands/clutches" to slip prematurely. I was subsequently advised to retain the existing old oil and just hang on so to speak but it was too late by then!

Just my 2 cents

I was going to change mine at the weekend , but after reading this little lot , not feeling so confident now, when you guys change the oil do you remove the sump pan and clean out the filter , the other thing looking at the fluid on the dipstick it is still a nice red colour so should i bother

I'm the same. I was intending to change it just because it's been in there for the 3 years I've had the car. It was clean (red but clear) when I got the car (Jap import), and now it;'s still clear but more brown - what should I do...
