Hi Guys,

I'm pretty when it comes to DIY, but I've really fallen at the hurdles on this one and need some help. I wouldn't have asked but we have had no heating now for 3 days. I have bought three different room temperature control switches (thermostat control), but I can't get any of them to work. Where I have taken the old one off (it got broken, so is no longer any use), I have the three basic wires Netrual, Live, Earth. (blue, brown, Green/yellow). I think I have wired the switch up as per the wiring diagram (which to be honest I don't fully understand). I have also tried various combinations of the wires, obviously some blew the trip straight away. Nothing seems to work.

My next port of call will be an electrician. But just before that can anyone help ?

What, a bit like Carol Smilie? She's pretty when it comes to DIY!:D

Hope a sparky on here can help you out and get you toasty warm mate....good luck!

Stuart,

Central heating is a pain in the arse.

Check if you have a temp controller on the cylinder (usually in the airing cupboard). As a quick fix turn the temp up on this one as it' should over ride the room stat. Just be careful cos ur hot water will be phookin hot!!

What make of switch was on there before?

You'll need to find out the boiler make and check the switches you are buying are compatible with it as some temp controllers dont work with some systems.

Failing that take ur boiler handbook/manual and the old switch to a decent plumbing shop and they will tell you which one to buy and how to fit it. Gets rid of the expensive electrician visit!!

Thanks Nick, I'll visit the plumbers yard over the weekend.

I have got a temp controller on the boiler. I'll turn it up tonight see what happens.

Not sure what make it is as my house was built in the 1930's and to be honest I'm sure the boiler has never been changed. It's behind a wall in the chimney breast which in turn is behind a fireplace which is behind a cabinet (build to hide the fireplace - don't worry it is heavily vented ;) ). Hence I don't have a manual. I'm pretty sure that the one on there was also the original. It hasn't had a casing on it since I bought the house (7 years ago) and it was falling to pieces. The mrs kept going on at me to change it so I bought another switch and looked at the wiring diagram and put it off for a year. She kept nagging so I decided to change it over. She's been freezing her cods off now for a few days. That will teach her Muhahahahahaha ..... evil !!! :D.

As a short term alternative, can you not connect the blue and brown together? Presumably its just a microswitch type thermostat? The trick with the boiler stat will only work if you don't have a three way valve to control hot water independently of CH. Otherwise your hot water will just burn the skin off your hands.... It sounds like a fairly simple system as they go - the stat closes, shorts the connection which provides power to the leccy valve, which when fully open turns on the water pump in the boiler....

I have a 3 way valve. But I'll try it anyway. She's moaning about it being cold and if she keeps monaning I may forget to tell her that the water may be a little hotter than normal. :D

Only kidding I couldn't do that to my missus :(

Duffers mate,
