In the last couple of days I've had two people tell me about needing to do some work on the underside of a jap import after it arrives :(

What are they on about? Are the imports not rust protected underneath or something?

If this is the case, have any of you with imports done anything about this?

Thanks in advance

Jaffa,

I've got an import and one of the first things I had done to it was to get it undersealed.

In Japan the cars are undersealed but only with a thin layer to stop any corosion. When it snows in Japan they dont grit the roads(use salt)therefore dont get the corosion problems that cars in this country get.

I used a garage near to me that was very reasonable and specialises in Japanese imports.

don't worry jaffa, its not a big job.....if i had bought the car in for you i would of done it...but it doesnt take long and it is worth doing ....especially with the amount of salt they put on our roads........

I was under the impression that Jap cars were better protected against corrosion than UK versions? Being that they were in a tropical environment and closer to the sea than that of their UK counterparts???

You ought to live in nuneaton then, the council dont seem too bother gritting the roads, good thing your car doesnt rot, bad thing you crash it!

I think the underseal issue is a popular myth, Although I do agree its a very good thing to add extra underbody protection, both cars come off the same production line and although trim and components fitted during manufacture differ for export and domestic jap market, I simply do not believe that during the body protection and paint process they would segregate the car bodies and use a different process depending on where the cars will be shipped, it just wouldn't be cost effective.

I'd also add, Judging from the rusty UK spec models I've seen about, it certainly doesn't appear they get additional protection to deal with our climate!!

Having said that, I'll stand corrected if anyone knows otherwise.

thanks everybody, I wasn't overly concerned as it can't be that big a deal with some many other imports running around.

FT, what kind of money are we talking about if you don't mind me asking?

Cheers,

James

if you wre to get it done inside doors etc its time consuming, but for a quick blast underneath about 1 hour.....£30?......plus wax.

Jaffa,

I paid £60 at Eurospec,my wife had her Pajero done there as well.

Cheers,
