It turned out very simple in the end. For me I hated the thought of removing the fuel gauge needle but it was easy enough to praise off. Then remove the fuel gauge face and the clear plastic strip under that. Turn the clocks over and remove the two screws holding the mileage counter and disconnect the electric socket. The mileage counter will now come out and fit the new one in reverse.
Gaz - on the back of the speedo there are 3 screws which hold the complete fuel guage in place, remove these and then simply remove from the speedo - this method means you do not have to remove the fuel guage needle or the guage face

separately.
