I have a 1992 Z32 and the gear change becomes very stiff if the car has been used and then left standing and then driven again. The problem is worse in the summer when the weather is warmer. It also occurs on long motorway driving when the car has travelled in 5th gear for a while.

The majority of the time its fine and I really only notice it if I have to use the car within a couple of hours.

Any sujgestions would be greatfully recieved.

Thanks for the advise, this is the first time i used this site as i have only found out about it today. I was hoping for some sensible answers.........please..

S

Is it the gear lever or the clutch that becomes stiff???

Ok......when did you have the gearbox oil changed?

And dont worry about sensible answers-you'll get plenty of them!

Afraid I cant help much as I'm not very mechanical but there are quite a few members that are.

I'll shut up now and by the way welcome!

Cheers,

F.T.

Its the gear change that become stiff. I have had new clutch and cylinders and new synco in the box itself. The syncro was changed because it became noisy in 2nd and 4th gears. Went away for about 10k but its back again.

Is the oil level ok? It might be worth stripping the shifter bushing and cleaning any old grease out of it - this may be seizing up as the heat increases... This can be accessed from inside the car - remove the gearstick gaitor etc..

I have this problem to at times, I was told it was due to syncros.

Has anyone solved this problem without stripping syncros?

I have had the same before where it would be especially bad when cold and generally played up - all the signs of a knackered tranny. Gears were not crunching, just very stiff. Redline MT90 fully synthetic gearbox oil resolved the problem for me. It was like night and day difference.

MR2's especially are well know for this problem and most UK and US owners swear by Redline Gearbox oil.

This is a cheaper alternative to another expensive rebuild. Don't right off the box just yet. As a precaution, do make sure your clutch isn't dragging.

Andy

GOOD point!!!! Make sure the clutch isn't dragging!!! This would explain it perfectly.

One point about the redline oil - it causes slightly accelerated wear to the synchros but nothing for any major concern ;)

Thanks for all your responses.

Do i have to completly drain the old old out of the transmission or can I use say half and half?.

Simon

From memory you need just under 3 bottles, it's about 3.1 litres I think.
