my TT has a very occasional miss, most often occuring when cold no worse on or off boost just hits now and again. Now I haven't had chance to go into diagnosis mode and check compression etc. but from my experience coilpacks are a known failure point on many older cars and the Z's of the age where it's definitely a likely candidate.

 

So my question is this, can you buy splitfires for the Z like you can the RB engines? and see the PTU, can it be upgraded, or can you buy the S2 new?

z32 coil packs are nigh on bomb proof.Even at 700hp they dont suffer spark blow out.So my advice is,if it aint broke,dont mend it.

Problem is coils giving an intermittent spark are also a dick to test conclusively without the aid of newer on-board diagnostics. I remember the PTU in skylines were known for failing.

It will be a breakdown elsewhere i assure you not the pack.PTUs can go faulty but usually corrosion is the problem.I would pull the injector plugs and clean them and the ptu connections first.

No harm in giving it a shot.. what's what you say new GTX2860's are essential maintenance items too? must tell the mrs.

This is a great inexpensive tool that tests coil pack trigger signals from the ptu and coil pack firing strength, also with a bit of use you can use it to work out the spark plug condition, all with no dismantling, was never without mine in the workshop.

What does that set you back roughly? Looks like a decent bit of kit! Did you ever find yourself upgrading coils or not bothering Jeff?

Although many many things have stopped working on my zed. I have 6 coil packs that have worked flawlessly since 1990.

Been some years ago now, £60 seems to be in my head, the coil packs are very robust electrically but can fail if mishandled. Splitfire coil packs look real nice but only ever fitted one set for a customer as a special order and we're over £300 and there was no difference that was perceivable.

Price has near doubled now I think... I'll do some investigation first and see if I can get a hold of one of those testers. Knowing my luck it'll be something terminal haha. Good excuse to rebuild ;-)

Why after millions of pound of Nissan development would you try and better the Nissan ones is beyond me I’ve known two people who fitted the spitfire one and both had problems with them both of the z’s I’ve had both not standard power Nissan ones are bomb proof.!

Because that was 30 years ago. There are better alternatives now. Even Toyota yaris coils have more power than the old Nissan ones.

Have heard mixed reviews about the splitfires though, some even saying they don't have more energy than the stock coils

Oh, and I would suspect injectors especially if they are the series 1 injectors, they are prone to failure. I had to replace one this fall and I guess it's just a matter of time before another follows suit...
