Something that has been going through my mind lately is 'why do a lot of zeds die on rolling roads?'. Airflow is a major factor for keeping the car operating within its temperature limits. Typically a RR will have a huge fan that is placed in front of the engine bay and this blows nice cool air over the engine and radiator. Now, think of a Zeds IC setup - they are in a PISS POOR position for receiving airflow anyway, nevermind if there isn't anything blowing at them ;) Stock intercoolers will heat soak very quickly if the engine is under load with no flow. So then you get detonation and before you know it BANG....

Anyone else any thoughts/ideas??? RRs are almost essential for propper tuning of a car - if we can't use them it only leaves us with 'on-road' tuning which isn't exactly as easy or accurate - RRs allow you to hold the engine at a certain rpm while changing the load etc....

IIRC these have been illegal for a long time. Im sure the square rear plates are illegal, also the law states the manufacturer of the plate must be printed on it somewhere, so if the pigs find you have a square number plate (which just happen to be legal when they are fitted to 4x4's, trucks, etc.. when sold in the UK) not only can you get fined, but the manufacturer gets an earfull too, this is why the rear plates are more expensive now.

Anyway I don't think the cops could really care much about the number plates tbh, ive seen cars with very small plates on running around, around here, there is an MR2 with a plate so small you can hardly read it, also there is a golf with black/silver plates on. They have been running around for a long time so it seems the police dont want to stop them. Also a lot of the cars I saw at billing didnt even have a front number plate!

I dont know about the plates. I think its whether what mood the police are in.

Many times I have told the story of a police car going down the wrong side of the road to pull next to me at lights, blocking the oncoming traffic to tell me that the 7 should be next to the H. WTF. His exact words where

"Your number plate is illegal"

Me: "Why?"

"Your 7 should be next to your H"

The plate was legal size, legal font, legal colours. But what it was you have a half a gap between the reg letter and the number then a full gap from the numbers to the letters. I think the one I had, had a full gap from the reg to the number. And I see cars with the bolt inplace making letters not what they are like

C19THY. The curl at the bottom of the 9 is gone its touching the 1 with a black bolt positioned making it look like an A. I see that all the time, no one has told them to change it. Yet my 7 should be next to the H.

Police are just tossers.

Stuart

Just to keep it off topic!

Making CATHY out of C19THY???

Never heard anthing so ridiculous in my whole life!!! LOL

So basically these new rules mean we can have a square plate on the front......great.

Ive been told many times about the reg plate laws,

It should say;

B (11mm gap) 1 (11mm gap) 9 (34 mm gap) R (11mm gap) K (11mm gap) S. And everytime i get told this it costs me 30 quid!!

Also when i got my rear plate it was a bit too large for the holder on the back of the zed, thus i had to chop a bit off, the bit with the plate makers name on. Looks like i've got a potential shafting waiting to happen here too, ah well.

Prat! My English may suck in that post, but I thought I better bring it down to your level. How does it go? Hire a teenager while he still knows everything. :D

The law does state that the maker's details must be on the plate, but that has only recently been implimented, there are also a number tighter restrictions that came into force on Jan 1st. There is nothing to say that the plates are not 'original' and as such recent legislation cannot be implimented. All changes effect 'New' plates only.

Now toddle off to lessons I think I heard the school bell.

Tim

My understanding of rear plate law is that on an import you are allowed to have a plate that fits inside the recess made for the number plate, but no smaller than the recess...As for fronts, have not got a clue.

Except that I understand "Specs" speed cameras cant read square number plates.

Really? Now THAT is interesting......... if it's true I can see a large number of square plates appearing on imports in the not too distant. Those SPECS cameras are getting far too common.

Can't get done on my bike (No front plate obviously) but they're talking about introducing front plates soon!

Can you imagine a? how bad that would look and b) what it would do to the handling having a f**k off plank of plastic stuck to the front wheel!!?!?!

Thinking of getting a personalised number plate actually. Seen one which is ideal. CHR1S. Or even CHR15 W. The 2nd one was offered for a snip - only 55k! LOL!! What would you put that on, a Lear Jet??!!!

Really !!!! There are a few cars around with square plates - lots of the 4wd Toyota type things, Landrovers, Freelanders (?), most bikes (which also have smaller numbers), tractors, American cars and virtually all Jap import cars. All in the minority I know, but I suppose there is a slim, slim, possibility that square plates can't be read, they'd just have to be done manually I suppose.

When my car was first imported they put matching square plates on the front and back. After my front plate got cracked I replaced with with a std UK plate because I thought it looked nicer.

They used to have the front numberplate made of steel, and mounted on the front mud guard, in line with the wheel. Great for slicing up pedestrians! Now they want to bring it back?!?!?

I'm glad we live in such a calm, stable and civilised world, so that we can worry about and enforce laws on this kind of obviously super-important stuff!

Shame none of these terrorists seem to go for the houses of Parliament. Wipe out that antiquated load of self-obsessed arse pickers and start again with something new. Jeez, this country and most of the people in it make me want to PUKE!

As a put on my best flame proof suit ...

I don't have a problem with speed cameras or with ensuring that they can identify my car every time. The more identification the better when someone comes to nick my car. And while I'm driving it, I can't see the number plates anyway !

And I would have no objection to cameras being used to track my progress around the country. If that could be used to reduce terrorist & criminal activity then it would be a good thing. And for those who complain about 'freedom', how does it reduce freedom for someone to be able to trace where you are ? You're just as free !

I do object to speed cameras in places where it's unnecessary - but that's a different debate.

Sorry, think I've taken this off topic but then that's what this thread is all about !

I know where you're coming from.....if you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to worry about. BUT, it's the thin end of the wedge. Who's to say that once they've got all this stuff in place to track everyone, there won't be another ridiculous bit of legislation put through that you DON'T agree with. Lets face it, although the UK is generally one of the better countries in the world, we don't exactly lead the way in open or honest government. And as for the police...........well.

I agree there's a risk there and that it leads to the potential for more draconian rules. My gut feel says that things probably won't get too bad though. Like you, I don't think this is THAT bad a place to live even though we'd all like things a bit different ! Certainly I'm still of the opinion that the politicians aren't as bad as the criminals (apart from Hamilton of course!).

Call me paranoid but, if they can trace/track you around the country would it not therefore be feasable to work out your mean speed between point A to point B?

They are already threatening Traffic Master with witholding evidence because they are reluctant to let the police tap into their network of cameras!

I was told, only last week, that there are a number of static 'covert' cameras operating in Canterbury tracking number plates, and a dedicated team of coppers reacting to info supplied by them, such as non payment of Road fund (no, I don't have a problem with catching Tax Disk dodgers), since these cameras' are, at present, non 'speed cameras there is no need to make them visable! My source btw works for the local plod, so it is reliable.

Food for thought!

or...

Money for old rope!

So just sit tight and wait for your fixed penalty notice. :@

Tim

OK Tim - you're paranoid !

I reckon that most of us would like realistic speed limits set and then adhered to. I'd like to see 20 mph in areas with a lot of pedestrians and then up to say 90 or 100 on safe stretches of motorway. Perhaps with an element of driver experience factored in (like P plates in other countries).

At the end of the day, no matter what anyone tells me, doing 150 mph+ on a public road is endangering others. If you're on a motorway and you have a blow out at that speed then those coming in the other direction are at risk of debris - and that debris will be travelling at 220 mph towards them if they're doing 70 mph.

Of course, the fact that my current car has a top speed of 95mph downhill may be a factor in my current opinion.

You realise that will never ever happen though, don't you?

I'm sure the powers that be would rather see a blanket limit of 20mph, including on the motorways.. And lets face it, limits will never be raised about 70mph, despite evidence from the states that raising the limits to the mean speed actually reduces accidents.

Personally I don't like the idea of being tracked all over the country either - and I've nothing to hide..

The issue isn't about having nothing to hide, it's about what else all this useful information can be used for. It's not 'freedom' as such, it's privacy !

Huh? The politicians ARE the criminals! ARCHER!!!:D Oh, and prisoner 123456 (from Have I got news for you) and Hamilton, etc. etc. and they're the ones we know about. What about all the little back scratching deals that are done behind the closed doors of Westminster? "OK, so if you don't regulate this or that PLC too much there will be a lifetime non-exec position on the board for you when you get out of the House". Quango's, boards of enquiry, watchdog bodies etc.

Want to selll arms to a know terrorist nation? "No problem sir, in fact we'll make sure you get a quiet Knighthood for it."

Just imagine if you were a member of CND or Green Peace or something similar. They could bug your house, tap your phone, and now follow you all over the country, seeing who/where you visit.

Most criminals directly affect a few individuals. Politicians screw everyone!......and they have NO IDEA how to stop your Z engine from detting on a rolling road....useless bastards!

That was my point.. I just.. didn't make it very well.. :)

Back to the reading. or not of square plates, I was told that the software reads only in one line, ie a normal rectangular plate, and that when it reads say just 3/4 ,etters/figures it dumps it as it is not enough for a number plate. The theory being they will only loose a few so who cares. If true it proves the pint that they are not interested in speed as much as revenue. Same applies to bikes. I ran a squre plate on a Volvo est, and if I went too fast through a particulat speed warning device, the sort that flash at you and say slow down, it dd not flash me, but it did in other cars???

I am in favour of speed limits/cameras in towns, schools etc etc. But they would put them everywhere if they could, and then have a special middle lane for themselves like they used to/have in Russia. Afterall they are more equal than us. Proved by Blair Liar using the busses and taxis only red lane on the M4. Long Live The Revolution. (Bagsy I am Leader first)

FFS :D Are unrecognisable plates not just manually processed?

Anyway, next time I go to a rolling road I'm gonna ask them to make me some square number plates up  Who would have thought the topic of rolling roads could so rapidly turn into a number plate debate :D I'd rather worry about blowing my engine than a sh1tty piece of plastic with letters and numbers on :p

That's only because you haven't needed a number plate for 18 months Andy !

Fantastic thread this from rolling roads to no plates then onto a bit of civil liberty, a dash of poitics, and now a holiday!!!

Im only replying to get my post count to 500 quicker!

are GATSO shots processed digitally? I was under the impression they were all processed manually, and only the SPECS camera's were automatic. If thats right then it wouldnt be posible for it to be processed manually because it would take the first shot and not be able to understand it, then it wouldnt know what to look for the next time. Would be a waste of time searching for matches manually IMO but tbh I wouldnt put it past the UK's police force:rolleyes:

I think that if the computer kicks it out they then do it manually if they have the manpower, but if they enhance the picture in anyway they leave themselves wide open for it to be kicked out of court.

9 to go!!
