My tripmeter and odometer from my 1990 Nissan 300ZX twin turbo don't work well, sometimes they run and then they stop again.

Also my speedo meter, it drops completely dead, maybe later it suddenly comes alive again and going up and down and then it works again.

But later it will fall dead again, etc.

Any idea what this problem can be with my meters?

Maybe the sensor on the automatic?....or?

Check speedo sensor. PCB on back of speedo for dry solder joints and if jap possibly new converter.

I had the same issue and it is all three. Sorted the PCB and converter but speedo sensor giving grief still.

There are a few threads on here which help with this problem.

Thanks for the tip!

My Nissan stood still for 7 years, in the beginning the speedo worked fine, but after a month or six it started to fail, the odometer and tripmeter already had the problem from the moment I started driving it.

No worries. Just have a go and see what you can sort yourself. Most garages haven't a clue about these

The odometer issue is caused by a low energy motor that drives it and the unit been too tight for smooth operation, the cluster needs removing and the odometer removing as a whole part, blow it clean with an air line if possible to remove all dust and lint, then with a very sparing amount of WD40 or similar sprayed on the cogs its should come back to life.

The speedo problem itself can be caused by a faulty speedo sensor although that is less likely if it works ok sometimes, as said above the most likely is a poor solder joint, follow my link below I did some years back should help, remembering the solder joints may also effect the odometer at times.
