Hi Gents,

My 300zx has been playing up over the last few weeks. I have tracked it down to an ECU fault, it is quite well documented on twinturbo.net

Basically the car will be driving (under any conditions) and it will cut out, CEL light comes on and aux fan comes on, Can't pull any codes as the light is on solid . If I disconnect the ECU and reconnect it the issue goes away for a day or two then comes back.

The car had a new loom a few years ago and all the wiring looks to be in good nick apart from wire off the ecu which is held together with one of the blue plastic crimp clips.

The car was mapped by Noz a few years ago so I believe the ECU chip to either have a dry joint (what ever that means ) or it needs re-fitting.

Do you guys know where I can send my ECU to get this checked and work done ?

Cheers,

Adam

There is a guy you could ask in church Stretton, he deals in nothing but ecu's his name is mark Adams he trades as tornado systems, he sorted a Land Rover ecu for me a couple of years back

Everything you describe is a bad solder joint on the eprom carrier, or a bad leg on the eprom.

Thanks for the replies gents. I am going to open it up myself this evening to see if there is anything obvious .

I'll put some pics up in case there is something very obvious you guys can spot .

I have Pm'd a member on here, who helped resolve this issue for another member. I have offered to cross his palms with silver, hopefully he can help me :-)

Hi Guys,

Just to update you, I still have an ECU problem :-(

I removed the old ecu and then put it back on and the car, it ran fine for three days then the same fault occurred . I removed the ecu and managed to get home OK but have been put off driving it until its sorted( that was three weeks ago)

I purchased an ECU off ebay (turned out to be a member on here ) the ecu had a socketed chip, I planned to test the ECU on my car and if it worked swap the chips over.

I disconnected the battery fitted new ECU and then reconnected the battery, fuel pump started priming without the keys in the ignition ?

car started fine with no CEL lights etc .turned the ignition off and the fuel pump was still on .

I swapped my Noz chip into the new ECU andd the car runs great except the fuel pump is always on :-(

Can anyone shed any light on this ? getting frustrated now.

Thanks,

Adam

Simple one, the new ( used ecu ) is faulty, the ecu controls the fuel pump module, it does this by monitoring the crank angle sensor, this is done on the mother board via output transistors, it would seem one of these output transistors has a failed gate and is leaking enough current flow to trigger the fuel pump module.

Ecu`s are quite robust but they are all 25+ years old now so very likely will be seeing more of these kind of problems as they get older.

Like most things anything can be fixed but at what cost?? an ecu is what £100 or less, a repair is unlikely to be much less, finding another ecu is most likely the best way, not sure if I have any socket one`s will take a look see if I can help you out, but got a feeling most of what I have are 16 bit series 2 / 3 ones which is no good, will update later when I have been to my workshop.

Saying that, we had a good relationship with these guys and they even scanned a car for a whole day to build a data base of inputs and outputs at our workshop to add it to their own data base, so they could fix it but its the cost thing....

Hi Guys,

I have got a new ECU but I need to get a chip socket so I can have my new ecu chipped, does anyone know where I can get a chip carrier/ socket?

I have emailed Noz and there is no response , I have tried the phone numbers on his website and they are both out of action.

Anyone know where I can buy one ?

Thanks,

Adam

Yes loads on e-bay, or find your local Maplins and they sell them too, saying that, you will still need the old eprom removing and the socket soldering in, the company I used to use will do this for you by post, https://www.atpelectronics.co.uk/ give them a call and ask for Jackie or Steve and mention Zedworld not only will they supply and fit the socket they will warranty their work, if your lucky it will only be a 2 / 3 day turn around.

Oh and as far as calling / messaging Noel, do not waste your time, most of his ex-customers are finding the same cold shoulder issue...
