As some of you may know I'm a Graphic Designer and also own a vinyl cutter. These two factors led me to think...

I'm having my car resprayed in January and my mind has turned to how to stop, or at least minimalise, the stone chips, the biggest problem area seems to be on the front of the sills as the road debris has a fantastic sand-blasting effect on the paintwork. The other area that takes a real bashing is the panel between the headlights.

I had initially tried to get some OE mudflaps but these are proving difficult to source. I had also considered a Car-Bra (US stylee), an ugly solution, although one I might still use if I decide to go on track.

The long and short of this thread is, with the number of people having their cars resprayed or bodykits fitted, how many of you would be interested in a DIY clear paint protector kit? Pieces would be cut to shape ready for application. The kits would not be cheap as the raw materials are expensive (3M Scotchcal Paint Protection Film) but I'm not here to get rich so they would be as close to cost as possible, I would imaging front-end kits would be in the region of £85-£120. In the kit would be all you need for a DIY installation: Instruction sheet, precut 3M Scotchcal Paint Protection Film, squirty bottle, application fluid and a squeegee.

If all goes according to plan my car will be wearing the protector sheet by end Jan. So I'll post pics or you'll be able to see it at shows/meets.

Please show any interest by filling in the poll above.

Thanks

Tim

Nice idea. woudl you be able to specify how big a section you want to clear coat ect?

My idea was that there would be a 'universal' kit to start with. Fitting a standard Zed's bodywork, and that you would order some extra raw material for areas not covered by the kit.

For those with modified bodywork, I'd have to make the kits to order or supply uncut sheets for you to make your own. There are obviously problems with making 'special' kits as I would need access to the car to take measurements create templates.

Forgive my ignorance, but surely a thin sheet of polythene type material would be more likely to sustain damage from stone chips etc, thus instead of having a scratch on the paint youd get a scratch on the plastic over the paint???? Or is the idea to peel it off if this happens and reapply a new sheet, if thats the case forget i said anything!!

Hmmm good idea i think.

Foliatec do this stuff already and Peter @ PPS has put it on mine on the bad areas for stone chips - eg the scoops in wide arches, front edge of sills etc

It's just a toughened self adhesive film.

Its a good idea Tim, Like Chris said Peter@PPS fits it and it does work.

As people here say it works then I'll definitely go for it next time I get the front end resprayed ! Just not at the mo !

If you're looking to buy enough to make it viable then it might be worth speaking to Frank at FG's in Nottingham as he's always got several Z's in the bodyshop and could probably flog them like sweets !
