Who's successfully re-trimmed their interior rear quarter panels (the upper parts that go saggy)? I'm looking to do mine and took it to my local trim shop as I figured they'd be able to match the vinyl and fit it correctly with heat and the correct adhesive.

Alas, no, they advised that the material and manufacture technique would mean that they'd not be able to get the right match or fitment and showed me some swatches. The stuff they use is proper seat vinyl which is about half a MM thick and would not cover correctly and the grain wouldn't match nor the colour.

Has anyone successfully done this? Mine need doing, they're not terrible, but they're not great. I wouldn't know what sort of material to use, something without a backing I guess which is what most trim shops would have.

I don't know whether to laugh or be mildly offended that you haven't asked for my input on this....

I had to source some blue vinyl for Jimmer not too long ago as one of his customers had the same issue that you have. I found a very close match, but it isn't perfect.

Why not? Because the vinyl is now nigh on 30 years old and the design and composition of these things change over the years, which means a perfect match is going to be pretty much impossible.

The original panel has a thin layer of foam between the vinyl and the plastic panel, and it's this that degrades (rather than the glue failing) and causes the trim to lift. So you either need to find some vinyl that has a thin scrim backing, or buy the scrim foam separately.

You know what, I didn't want to annoy you with something so trivial I guess.

Can you see what you can get hold of and I'll happily send up my panels and money!!

I'll see what options I can find in a very dark grey vinyl (cos the trim in these cars isn't black) and let you know. :)
