Good evening,

I've just joined as am thinking of getting a 300zx. It's a car I've wanted since I was young.

Well I figured the best place to start would be an owners forum. Hopefully any advice I might need I will get here.

So on that note a big thanks in advance.

Hello,

Yeah it's on the Norfolk, Suffolk Cambridgeshire border.

I really want a turbo and I like white as it's a traditional Japanese colour.

I have seen a white one for sale which from a quick look here seems to be an old members car, Kingsley?

It is a na, looks fantastic condition. A bit more than I'd want to spend on a na. I've also seen a turbo on autotrader for a little under 4k.

Yeah Kingsley's fresh import, due to circumstances he had to sell it, i dont think its been in the UK much longer than 6 months.

It is fantastic condition but it high priced for an NA. worth it, but only to the right person.

I had a flick through the autotrader ones, was it the grey or red one on autotrader you were looking at? And do you mind an automatic, they tend to sell for less fyi.

Yeah I did think it was a high price for a na. But still a lovely looking Z.

The autotrader one was the grey one. I'm not a big fan of red cars. That said I've still had five red cars and have a red mr2 sat on my drive at the moment.

Yeah I have seen the purple na. Again a lovely looking car but just seems high price for a na. I have a nagging feeling if I get a na I will always be thinking I should have gone turbo. Daft thing is I don't want to be driving it hard so probably don't even need the turbo.

I know what you mean George a TT is a great Z so go for it.

I see two tt's on eBay both look good.

I imported mine & it cost me more than these!

why not see if you can arrange a drive in both na and tt, then make an informed decision ??

Could I get a better understanding of your wants?

Auto or manual?

Autos can be known as slushboxes, but for cruising and traffic you will be thankful, but heaven help you if it breaks. It's a good manual box, they are slightly rarer so will sell for more. You can ultimately get a transmission swap, but probably better if you find the right one in the first place.

Budget?

Project cars start around £1000-1500 NAs £2000-£3000 TTs, you can get motd ones, but they tend to need some rust repair, or there was a silver one on gumtree that is down 1 cylinder etc.

£3000+ should get you a good driving car with no problems, probably not the cleanest though.

£5000+ should be very sorted cars with good engine and good exterior etc.

Plans?

Do you want to keep it how it is and drive it, or tinker with some little mods or build to your dream car etc. Performance mods? If you want to do performance then obviously TT, and na is hard and expensive to eek not power out of.

Can't think of any other important ones for now, but good luck with your search, maybe even have a chat to gazwoz about imports but I doubt it will be cheap, but you will get a mint car.

There are quite a few owners in Essex, one being our car of the year last year, as well as at the agm and winning the top price at simply Japanese out of 1500 cars... Mr Joely [emoji14]

There are of course meets and shows and convoys etc throughout the year... Look forward to seeing what you can do!

Well I'm happy for either a manual or auto box. I used to be anti auto when younger but now I enjoy an auto for a relaxed drive. Not sure if the 300zx is a car to get for relaxed driving or more spirited.

Price wise I was thinking around the 4k mark for a good clean na or around 5k for a good clean TT. I'd expect the NA to be in better condition for the 4k mark than the TT at 5k. But to be fair I'm aware my knowledge on the 300zx market is not fantastic.

I'm not massively mechanically minded. I can do the basics but the 300zx does seem to have a lot if engine crammed in to not a lot of space. So a little tinkering but anything serious and it would be off to a garage. I am quite form over function if I'm honest. So it would have to look good. Which I realise in itself is very subjective.

I've got kingsleys (dereks) z stored in my garage if your interested

I'm still weighing up the options but appreciate it. May get back to you on it if OK.

The Z can be what you make it to be, a cruiser or a spirited lively driver. lots have loud exhausts so that can be anything but relaxing! But they are certainly fun to drive.

£5k should get you a very nice Z, but the market at the moment is a bit bizzare but Joshlakes import is listed on there for 4800 I recall TT auto, http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?184441-Nissan-300zx-Twin-Turbo-Automatic-LWB-2-2-1995 also on a eBay auction. And then the blue eBay auction. Other than that there aren't many nice ones for a reasonable price

Looking good is half the job! They are quick enough as they are for most people. Some customisation is what makes your Z special.

Unfortunately the two main Z garages, Powezed and la autos are quite a trip away so you would hope that you can find a garage that will work on it, a lot of garages won't touch them or give you silly figures so best to shop around. There is plenty of stuff outside the engine bay to do as well so I'm sure you can keep yourself busy if you want to.

4800 not 4750

My friends TT Zed is still for sale. Needs an mot but it's really clean. Got it advertised at £3k but he will take a bit less. Have a look in the classifieds, plenty of pictures in the ad.

Apart from the rust that is... Shame.

U make it sound like it's covered in rust. There's much worse out there for more money. Decent car for someone.

Cheers for the heads up. Had a look, seems quite nice. How reliable are the gearboxes on the autos? I guess you hear bad press as people talk about it if they have a problem but you don't hear about the ones running without issues.

I would recommend an NA, they drive much better than a TT in my opinion. They also sound a lot better and they still go really well.

I would rather a high quality NA than an average TT for the same price

Agree kingsley only done approx a 1000 mls since imported last year a nice car to drive and a rare spec with low mileage

The auto boxes are fine mine has done 90,000 Mls still going strong, history of maintenance and fluid changes are good to know. My Jag had a new box at 30,000 mls.
