I think i have Over filled autobox after gbox change.

I was told 7.5ltrs. Only drove it a mile and it wasn't shifting up properly at higher revs and was bouncing of limiter. Was also smoke coming from what I believe is the breather on the gbox on the back right of the engine near battery!

Does this the shifting sound like it's because there is to much oil? Or could it be another issue with the box I'm worried as not had chance to drain it yet and it was a used box I purchased on merit! Would also appreciate confirmation on the correct fluid and amount needed

Was that just a fluid change with the box still on the car or did you have the box off and drain the torque converter?

Hi mate no box came off! I think the tq converter was just removed and refitted! It may have lost some oil should I have refilled it?

The whole thing from dry takes about 8.5 litres, but when you swap it the boxes are never really empty, the torque converter still holds lots of fluid so oy only really need 5-6.5 in most cases. You fill it until the line is right on the dipstick.

From the sound of it, the gearbox was burning the fluid and definitely sounds the like gearbox if hooked unfortunately, although not necessarily because you overfilled it. Dexron 3, buy about 7 liters, but only put in what the gearbox can take.

When you buy a box usually they just take them off the car and don't drain them thoroughly, even if you do drain it, there will still be a large amount of fluid in it. I've had my torque converter off and it took about 2 days to fully drain. It's just not viable, just fill the box to the correct level (and make sure to shift to make sure it flows around the gearbox and then refill)

There might be some more scientific answers but in any case, I hope for the best as I've had too much pain with autos breaking, so I ditched then in the end.

What Alic said... best to keep checking and topping it up a bit at a time until the level is right. That way you're taking into account any fluid that is left in the box/converter. Sounds to me like the box has been overfilled.

Was this meant to say ****ed? I bloody hope it's not after just changing it! I was hoping it was just because it was to full and it was coming out the breather :(

I'm hoping draining and getting it to correct level it will be OK?

Certainly worth trying. It won't cost you anything extra and you may be lucky and get away with it.

I say that because my started burning fluid, grinding and smoking out of the dipstick because it overheated, and was gone completely.

You gotta hope for the best though... There is a drain port (not very early boxes) but you would lose a lot of fluid opening that. Also if the fluid that comes out is brown, that's bad news.

I knew your pain mate, my auto failed the trip after I swapped it, so now the cars got a manual in it, I had enough.

Sorry to hear about the trouble u got with the auto box!

Getting a second hand auto box can turn out to be a waste of time, effort & money.

Alic found that out & so have l!

No wonder they go to manwell!

Some z owners like the autos though.

Only way to get a sound Autobox is probably a new or recon one!

No one is going to spend possibly the price of their car on a recon box, or worse a new one!

Its just a gamble really. I got my box cheap, so it was really just the hassle for me.

Yes I didn't pay much for mine either. If this box is indeed a scrap then I need to concider my options!

Does anyone have a full manual conversion for sale for a start? Or is there somewhere that does a drive in drive out at a resonance cost! I have my own body shop with ramps and tools etc just not sure how much is involved in the job though and if it can be done by semi skilled mechanical experience.. either that or take my chances with another auto!

Good point Alic, that's just one of the problems buying a Z though, cost!

Mark Kent might have one, Baz has everything apart from the gearbox i think, and i think 300zx aly had a conversion though i cant remember and may have changed since I was last looking.

I wouldn't say incredibly difficult but some parts are easiest if done by somebody who knows what they're doing. The wiring for one is confusing for me. Definitely possible, especially as you have access to ramp, but don't expect you to be able to finish it on one Saturday.

Lee Dent can do the conversion in Shrewsbury who is quite close to you?

From previous looking, the conversion parts are £600, Not entirely sure but labour would be £600-900 (someone correct me?)

Think I have found a full conversion for £500 which seems OK! I will probably have a go at the conversion but the wiring worries me!
