I have got a TT Auto Import started getting a misefire and cutting out a few weeks ago which turned out to be the PTU, put a new on and great for about a day over took a lorry today then the car started misfiring between 1k and 3k rpm but no problem with foot flat to the floor , everytime i came to a junction the car would stall but restart straight away as long as the revs were kept high no easy feet trying to keep the revs above 1k so you can pull away in an auto, any bodies ideas and helpful suggestions would be appreciated , this also happened just after i filled up with fuel , and i did put the right fuel in = optimax :confused:

mine did EXACTLY the same and it was the coilpacks. Check they are all on properly as they come undone cos the connectors break. One of mine was about 2mm out and was causing the problems.

cheers Vijay will give it a go by the way how easy is it to do a self diagnostic ?? I think i will be spending Xmas cleaning every connector in the car :(

yes sorry I meant ECU so how do i do a self diagnostic

2 ways of doing it, i did it the official way as i couldn't find what was needed for the unofficial way.

 

Simply pull back passenger footwell carpet (held on by velcro IIRC) to expose ply wood, undo the 4 bolts holding it in.

 

U can now see ur ecu.. on the left theres a little plastic screw thing which u can turn with a flat screwdriver.

 

Turn the ignition on but don't start the engine.

Turn that screw on the ecu fully clockwise. Leave it a sec then turn fully anti-clockwise.

 

Now ur in diagnostic mode.

 

The check engine light on the dash will be flashing the appropriate code at you.

Long flashes are the first digit, short the second.

5 long flashes then 5 short flashes means 55. Thats what you want as it means everything is ok (or it thinks it is anyway).

 

 

not sure what the other codes are tho.

I always use the wire. I have one ready in my glovebox together with a little diagram reminding me which pins to bridge.

OK so did that and got code 21 which i presume is the PTU and the connections to and from it , could it also be anything else that is worth looking at that would bring this code up

Well the PTU (power transistor unit/ignition amplifier) is situated on the left had cam cover looking from the front of the car. It is rectangular and has fins on it. Remove BOTH connectors from it and check for green stuff - this must be removed. Use some electrical contact cleaner and push the connector on and off a few times - the contacts should clean themselves. Be carefull using anything abrasive to clean the pins - they are coated and if this coating is removed they will gunk up MUCH more quickly ;)
