Going to buy a 300ZX very soon so please help guys!!

Where do I begin?

Well, I currently have a rover 220 coupe turbo. Its fast, very fast, but I wanted something more but still in coupe styling and something that wasnt going to get me in debt for 10 years, HENCE the 300zx.

I have test drove a manual 300ZX TT and wasnt that impressed? Its a red UK car with 120,000 on the clock, standard, and the boost was reading just below 14psi which I presume is correct, but I diddnt get the same kick as I did from the 220 coupe when I first drove that?!?!?!? Whats going on?

The guy at the garage said that maybe the car isnt running 100% and that he would let me have it for £6000 as it stands. Its a 92 'K'.

A few questions for you?

Is £6000 for a manual UK TT about right?

What the heck is NA that you guys keep talking about?

My insurance is currently £720 F+T on the 220 coupe and they want an extra £80 for the UK manual 300ZX TT, which I was pretty impressed with, BUT!!!!!!! I really want a black UK manual but I think my odds on finding one of these has to be minimal, isnt it?

So, I got 2 quotes for a 300zx Manual TT import from Tesco and Firebond and they both qoute around £1400 F+T.

I am 25, 2yrs no claims, 6 points, 3 for a TS20 and 3 for a SP40, car would have a CAT1 and of course would be in a garage overnight, am I being ripped off for the insurance? I have never had a prang or claimed in my life (touch wood).

As I am new guys to the world of Jap cars any help you could give would be well appreciated.

I am a reformed RS Turbo owner who now can look at no other than the 300zx, its so so so sexy!!!

Please feed me your knowledge before I buy a bad car and make a mistake.....

well begin with thoroughly reading all the info on the tech site regarding buying a z, buying guide

its very informative and its what i did, insurnace is a nightmare but theres a page somewhere with lots of companies on, do a search and u should find it, i have a j spec tt auto and it certainly does have a kick so maybe that car wasnt running right, then again my car has no history so i dont know wether its been upgraded,

i too was a reformed rs turbo addict but in comparison nothing ive had can touch the z,

as to manuals yes they are quite rare

and something that wasnt going to get me in debt for 10 years, HENCE the 300zx.

These things are bloody expensive when they go wrong and need lots of tender loving care.

Didn't stop me from buying one though:D

The reason why you didnt have the same surprise as when you got the Rover Turbo is becuase you probably drove a 1.3 or something then went to a car with 3 times more power and does 0-60 2 seconds or 3 seconds faster that what you where previously drove.

Then you goto a Z with probably 33% more power and does 0-60 in 1 second faster, not as much as a jump as your first experiance.

But get the 2 cars side by side and you will see the difference, get the cars above 60 and you will see the difference even more.

Black Manual. You got a lot of looking to do. About 80% of Z's are automatics

hi newbie

na = normally aspirated, ie no turbos

as for the price, it really depends on the condition. i paid £7k for my L reg uk tt manual but i looked long & hard & mine is the cleanest i saw with fsh.

imports are always harder/more expensive to insure. try insurance factory, i dont think they charge any more for imports & were the cheapest for me anyway.

boost is around 9 psi as standard, but the stock gauge is crap & mine used to read just under 14 psi as standard. you can do an on board diagnosis to check for faults in the engine ecu. do a search on here to find out how.

where abouts are you??

on the question of price: look on the auto trader web site and do a nationwide search, anything worth looking at will start at about £4k on a G or H plate. I was lucky I picked mine up a manual red twin turbo import on a Jplate with loads of history import docs and receipts etc for £4k..Bargain...very low mileage aswell...

Private will be cheaper trade will be about £6k for a decent one but traders are not always enthusiasts so maybe a private buy from someone who loves the cars would be a better choice.Thats what I did and Im well happy..

On the insurance side Im 42 with full no claims and it costs me @£500 fully comp..shop around.

NA is normally aspirated ie non turbo.

hope this helps

If the garage has admitted that it maybe isn't running 100% right, then there is only one thing to do and that is WALK AWAY!!

These buggers aren't cheap to fix, but don't let that put you off, just keep looking for the right one.

Thanks for the info guys.

I am in Brakcley, just north of bicester and below banbury(OXFORD).

I went to Worldwide Motors in Newport Pagnell on Saturday mornig to test the manual UK red TT again, and I just wasnt impressed. The garage did admit that it wasnt running right!!

Its done 120K, is this alot of milage for one of these cars?

He also admitted that the engine had been changed recently but when I asked for the pasperwork he said that its around somewhere, mmmmm, l was a bit dubious at this point.

ANYWAY, he has quite a few 300zx's in so I then asked to drive another red 300,this time it was cherry red, lowered, import, twin 5"pipes (NICE!!!!) automatic so I knew what it was like to driver one. As soon as he started it up I was smiling. It had been stood for 4 weeks and started first crack and sounded the TITS!!!!

The drive of the auto really surprised me, its actually quite cool and this time when i floored it, it scared me!!! WOW!!! Thats what I was looking for, a car that is more than my rover and thats what I found...definately, it went like a jet!!!!

So, the UK car defintely isn't running properly......

Thing is, I want to get some of the carf on finance to leave me with some cash to mod the car slightly, but I've been told that most finance places dont like covering jap cars, is this true?

Sounds like the car wasnt running right then. 120K miles is nothing too much either.

If some one says the engine has been changed but cant show the goods, leave it a lone.

Sounds the TITS? never heard that before, I presume it means good. :D

BOLLOCK = Bad

DOG'S BOLLOCKS = Good

TITS UP = BAD

THE TITS = Good

Sounds about right.

tinkywinky - I live on the top end of brackley, just off the high street. I work in bicester, on Telford Road Ind estate, be cool to hook up for a chat etc and to check your car out.....

Have you had your car long?

I have a feeling I'm going to be waiting sometime to find me ideal car....:(

How ironic.

I live just round the corner from Telford road and work for BAR i Brackley !!

Had my Z a couple of months now, bit of a dog at the moment, plenty of sorting out to do before i start modding.

Have to get together after Xmas as this time of year is hellishly busy for me at work.

As for finding your car, this site is probably a v good place to look.

6K should buy you something reasonable.

Catch ya soon
