From what I gather you turn it off if youre gonna boot it!!

I used to drive with overdrive off all the time, untill someone on the forum said about when youre driving normaly you should have no warning lights up on the dashboard lit, and I thought hmm, youre right.

Is yours an import? If so youve got a power/hold button to play with to!

Hi,

From my very limited knowledge, the overdrive enables the gear spliting - to effectively give the car more gears and is better for general driving/motorway driving. From what i have heard there is small performance difference for standing starts etc (having overdrive off) then as you hit higher speeds its best to change the over drive back on to get the benifit of the higer gearing.

I have a jap import, so i use the "power" button (red lines the car in each gear) sometimes for over taking but i can never be bothered to switch the overdrive off - will have to try it sometime but then i find the 300ZX goes fast enough for me in overdrive :)

Any i never use "hold" mode either -waiting for some snow to try that one...

I think there's a misconception here - overdrive is just a 4th gear. It isn't going to come into play if you're pulling away.

The button is used in three situations : where you want to be sure that it's not going to change gear unexpectedly, where a small amount of engine braking is wanted (and you're at speed) or when you want to get into third and kickdown isn't doing the trick / you don't want to boot it.
